In 1928 the Thule Law was born; it was signed by Knud Rasmussen on 7 June 1929 and ratified by the Danish Government in 1931.
The Air Force studied the possibility of establishing a major operating base in Greenland when it became clear that round trip flights of planes carrying atomic weapons between mainland United States or Canadian bases and Siberian/European objectives were impractical.
A board of Air Force officers made a recommendation to pursue a base at Thule in November 1950; it was subsequently supported by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and approved by President Truman.

Thule Air Base is the United States Air Force’s northernmost base — (76 32’ North latitude, 68 50’ West longitude) located 695 miles North of the Arctic Circle, and 947 miles south of the North Pole on the Northwest side of the island of Greenland.
Thule is located in a coastal valley approximately four miles from the entrance of North Star Bay on Greenland's west coast.
The Thule area is barren most of the year; although from June to September, the snow melts and arctic tundra plant life such as poppies, cotton, mosses, and a variety of colorful flowers bloom.

Construction crews built the base in just 104 days under total secrecy in an operation code-named "Blue Jay." Its mission was to be a refueling point for long-range bombers on missions to the Soviet Union, should the need arise, but eventually bombers, fighters and Army Nike air defense missile batteries were based there.
The extreme weather and the remoteness of the location (Thule can only be reached by air or ship in the summer.) have given the air base a reputation of being an avoid-at-all-costs assignment for generations of airmen.
Thule is not for the frail -- physically or mentally -- but what it lacks in all-night convenience stores and beach towels, it makes up for in human spirit.
