Television documentaries, picture books, and other widely disseminated fruits of the fast-growing science of marine biology made the great whale a very sympathetic animal and a symbol of imperiled nature.
Although the population of humpback whales summering in Glacier Bay was never large, the bay was thought to be an important feeding area for the North Pacific herd of humpback whales, and further, they were a well-publicized tourist attraction.
As soon as Chapman floated the idea of closing Glacier Bay to vessels during certain critical phases of the summer whale migration, it was clear that the cruise ship industry stood to lose millions of dollars in the effort to stabilize the monument's humpback whale population.

Moses (Amik) Beaver is a professional Aboriginal artist from the isolated fly-in community of Nibinamik, (Summer Beaver) 500 kilometers north of Thunder Bay in Northern Ontario.
The Thunder Bay and District Catholic School, St. Thomas Aquinas, independently commissioned Moses to offer three half-day art/culture courses to Grades 4, 5, and 6 students, as did Five Mile School,and Algonquin School in Thunder Bay.
Moses hopes to spend more time in Thunder Bay in 2005, working with youth in the local schools and in various community projects, while continuing to develop his own talent as an Artist.
