As his brothers leave, Thunderbird 3 pilot Alan Tracy is asked to stay behind to monitor for developing emergencies, and he handles this news like any screen hero—by throwing a hissy fit until he falls into a deep sleep and has secret revenge dreams.
The various rooms of the airship are ridiculously fanciful—the "gravity" control room is a giant grid of revolving steel hoops that seems designed for a suspenseful shoot-out, while the bar is a marvel of bizarre 1960s pop design, with thousands of balls and spheres stuck to the walls and pillars.

But basically the TV series was about a high-tech top-secret rescue group of the future, composed almost entirely of one family (the Tracys), who were helped by agents all around the world.
I still have some Thunderbirds toys around here somewhere (alas, my Thunderbird 2 was broken and the pod went missing, along with my Thunderbird 4).

There are enough cool gadgets in this series to please the ten year old boy in every grown up man (I suspect this series is more of a guy thing because relationships take second place to action).
There is something else fascinating about this series and that is how seriously the producers, directors, designers took what was essentially a children's puppet show and kept to such high (and unnecessary) standards.
