Thungyai is the heart of the western forest complex, which is comprised of 17 forest regions, situated in western Thailand along the Tranao Sri Mountain Range, near the Mayanmar border.
Thungyai is also home to large proportion of Thailands wildlife species: 153 of 258 mammal species, 400 of 930 bird species, 188 of 500 fish species, 89 of 313 reptile species, and 41 of 106 amphibean species.
The Thungyai Forest can be compared to the Amazon Rainforest of South America because it supplies oxygen to southeast Asia and moderates flooding during the rainy season.

Red-brown earths and red-yellow podzols are the predominant soils, the former derived from limestone and found in the level uplands and Mae Chan Valley, whilst the latter is found in the Huai Kha Khaeng Valley.
These occur throughout the sanctuary as either wet or dry, and most appear to be located on, or around, granite intrusions in areas with red-yellow podzolic soil and may be associated with the massive faults or lineaments in the intensely folded geomorphology of this area.

Entry into the Thungyai Wildlife Sanctuary is strictly controlled and limited to research purposes only.  The sanctuary lies next to the border with Burma, 300km NW of Bangkok.
C temperature and heavy packs made it hard work.  We arrived at base camp and were pleasantly surprised to find a raised wooden platform with a nearby tributary river providing a water supply.  We were expecting to be sleeping in the forest with no facilities.
On Sunday 7 April we departed on a three-hour truck journey to the southwestern corner of the sanctuary near to Khao Laem Dam reservoir.

The Industry Ministry plans to ask cabinet to set aside for lead mining a 77-square kilometre area of prime forest land in Kanchanaburi, which otherwise is part of a proposed national park, a high-level source said yesterday.
Mr Somsak should respect a recent recommendation, jointly issued by the Forestry Department, the House environmental panel and Unesco's World Heritage committee, that mining activity be permanently prohibited in the area to preserve the precious forest,'' Mr Surapong said.
In past decades, the two mine operators had discharged lead-contaminated water into natural creeks in Thungyai Naresuan wildlife sanctuary, causing severe health problems for Karen villagers, he said.

Note: I came to a dilemma in compiling the map, that this Wildlife Sanctuary headquarters seems to be situated just north of the Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary and inside the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary.
He is confident the nearby sanctuary can attract visitors for its natural abundance of grass fields, swamps, and evergreen forests.
Ban Thi Pho Chi (or Tipoji) is situated in the geographical heart of the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, and in curious isolation.

Other than the numbers and distribution of the livestock, the wildlife ecologist and his team also gathered information on various aspects of how the villagers keep their livestock.
He found that while some people herd their cows and buffaloes into the forest during the day and bring them back in the evening, others simply let their animals forage freely in the wilderness, especially during the rainy season, to prevent their heavy hooves from trampling on the crops in their farmland.
So it is possible that foot-and-mouth disease, anthrax or other ailments suffered by some of the livestock could be passed on to their wild relatives.

The report, however, was again rejected, with insufficient wildlife data again cited as the main reason.
While in one section, the report states that about 90 per cent of their 407 species are ''intermediate", meaning they have no clear status due to a lack of information, it also concludes that 209 of the species (around 50 per cent) will be able to adapt themselves to the project.
