The most distinctive feature of the Thunnus is it's patented baitrunner feature that acts as a secondary drag system.
This feature allows an angler to feed out line in a tension-controlled free-spool with the bail closed allowing for a more easy setting of the hook and proves to be one of the best systems to fish live bait.
Other features of the Thunnus include a waterproof drag system to keep out saltwater and debris; precision cut gears to provide a smooth and powerful retrieve; a one way roller bearing to provide zero handle back-play and a ball bearing line roller coated with titanium for increased smoothness and reduced line twist.

While scientists have debated whether the species actually represents multiple species or subspecies, evidence now suggests that Thunnus thynnus is a single species.
The genus name Thunnus is derived from the Greek "thynnos" meaning tunna while the species name thynnus is translated as tunny.
Larvae of Thunnus species are very difficult to distinguish from one another, however bluefin are the only Thunnus species to have dorsal tail pigment.

STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF THE OLFACTORY SYSTEM OF BIGEYE TUNE, THUNNUS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Of the large pelagic species, bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus is thought to migrate to its spawning grounds by an unknown mechanism.
Previous investigations demonstrated not only little tuna, Euthynnus affinis and yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares were attracted to chemical attractants but yellowfin tuna also forms a chemical search image in procurement of food as a convenient system that enables the fish to switch to a major food source while ignoring food source of little abundance.
Evidence of this notion can be correlated to studies on feeding grounds of yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna where they tend to feed on a single food organisms like flying fish, squids, crustaceans and small fish at different locations and at different times of the year.
