Thurnscoe is a village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England.
The recent years have seen Thurnscoe be re-invented as a residential commuter village/town, although poor public transport to Thurnscoe somewhat limits this.
Thurnscoe is approximately half way between Barnsley and Doncaster, but sufficiently far enough from both to be out of their urban sprawl.

Thurnscoe Hall, was sold in 1868 by Rev J Simpson (later of Scarborough), and in 1875 the Ellis' were living at the Hall.

The highlight of my childhood growing up in Thurnscoe however was spending the day in a cell at Wombwell cop shop (aged 13) for breaking into both Hill Infants and Junior schools during the school holidays.
Thurnscoe is a particularly nasty example of many towns of it's ilk in South Yorkshire but I still have a soft spot for it and go back now and again.

Many of the children buried were stillborn due to congenital abnormalities or problems in childbirth.
Tragically, there are several mothers and babies buried together in Thurnscoe Cemetery when both were lost due to medical complications and a lack of facilities.

Residents from the Top End estate in Thurnscoe set up the Thurnscoe Action Group in an attempt to liase with the council over the possible demolition and replacement of homes on the land locked area known as the Bull Ring as well as on Cromwell Street and Brunswick Street, as part of the HMR programme.

It is thought to be the first time that drinking alcohol in public has been banned in an entire English village.
Once the ban is in force, anyone caught drinking alcohol in a public place in Thurnscoe will be asked to hand it over to the police or face arrest.

as you all know the pits closed, and for many years Thurnscoe was in the doldrums, but as they say "what goes round comes round"
The village itself has over the last few years has continued to improve and is once again showing signs of prosperity, the centre of Thurnscoe provides a wide cross section of shopping facilities, as well as schools, public houses, post office, etc

From Ferrybridge, heading south along this joint section, the first station encountered is Pontefract Baghill, which remains open today, before we reach a closed station at Ackworth (last served in 1951) then the station at Moorthorpe.
Frickley saw its station close in 1953, whilst Thurnscoe and Goldthorpe stations survived until the 1960's.
Beyond Bolton-on-Dearne we rejoin the North Midland's route to the south, opened in 1840 and serving Swinton, a new station here replacing that closed in 1967 and Kilnhurst West, also closed in 1967).
