Ferries operate between Scrabster, on Thurso Bay, and Stromness in the Orkney Islands.
Thurso was the centre of Norse power on the mainland in the 11th century until it integrated with the rest of Scotland after the Battle of Largs in 1263.
Its former industry of quarrying and exporting Caithness flagstones was in decline at the end of the 19th century, but has now been revived; in 1998 there were 10 working quarries.

Peter's Kirk, Thurso Thurso () is a town and a burgh on the north coast of Britain, at the northern extreme of the A9, the main highway linking Caithness in Highland Scotland with the south of the country, and about 32 kilometres (20 miles) west of John O Groats.
Thurso boasts also a small museum, 2 screen cinema, ten-pin bowling, a small skatepark and an internet cafe for cybergaming.
In Thurso the A9 has junctions with two other classified roads, the A836 and the B874, and about 8 kilometres (5 miles) south of Thurso the A9 has a locally important junction with the A882 (), which leads towards Wick.

Thurso FC is a relatively new club having only been formed for the 1998/99 season following calls for a local team to be formed in competition to challenge fierce local rivals, Wick Academy FC.
Despite its short history, the club has already built an impressive honours list and during the 2002/03 season, Thurso FC achieved the treble of the North Caledonian League (for the second time), the Morris Newton Cup and the Football Times Cup.
The Thurso FC club crest shows a Norse Viking holding a shield (in Thurso's home colours of red and white) while standing on a football (to represent the sport played by the club).

Thurso is the northernmost town on the British mainland, situated at the northern extreme of the A9 road, the main road linking Caithness with the south of the country, and is 20 miles (32 km) west of John O' Groats and 21 miles (34 km) northwest of Wick, the closest town.
The current champions of the Caithness County League are the Thurso Academicals FC, also known as 'Accies' who won the league in the 2005 season for the first time in 36 years.
From the A9 near Burnside (ND107689), in Thurso, the A836 leads generally west towards Reay, Melvich, Bettyhill and Tongue.

This brought the Thurso men to life who almost took the lead when a cross shot hit the crossbar which caused an injury to goalkeeper Iain Young who in trying to prevent a goal hit the back post hurting his back.
The referee blew for a penalty and the defender was lucky to stay on the park, but the resulting penalty was cooly finished by Alan Geegan who gave the keeper no chance.
I didn't see the Thurso game, but did see the Balintore one, and City were certainly by far the better team.

Following on from their successful season in the North Caledonian League which they won, along with the Morris Newton Cup and the Football Times Cup, Thurso FC swept the board with the awards at the Annual League Dinner.
Kevin Morris was joint top goalscorer (with Scott McKain of Dornoch FC) in the League with 16 goals from 18 games.
In addition, Thurso received the team award for having the best disciplinary record throughout the season.

Famous for football value, the last four seasons have seen Sharks FC on a roller coaster ride, going from bottom of the table without a single victory to winning the title and being promoted just two season later!
In between they appeared on a BBC documentary highlighting Thurso and gained entry into the FHM o2 Cup where players gave career best performances, battling past qualifying rounds into the quarter finals.
Last season Sharks were relegated, so they currently play in the Caithness 7s Division two.
