Thurston Joseph Moore (born July 25, 1958) is an American musician best known as a singer and guitarist for Sonic Youth.
He has collaborated with scores of artists, including DJ Spooky, Nels Cline, William Hooker, Christian Marclay, R.E.M. and Cock E.S.P. In the mid-90's Moore formed a side band, The Dim Stars, with punk legend Richard Hell.
In 2004, Moore performed in and produced an album for the all-star noise band To Live and Shave in L.A., the lineup of which also features Andrew W.K. In 2004 Rolling Stone ranked him and Lee Ranaldo, of Sonic Youth, the 33rd and 34th best guitarists of all time.

Aside from being one of Sonic Youth's founders, Thurston Moore is one of modern music's pronounced developers.
Thurston is remembered by many as a performer with composer Glenn Branca, which is how he met band mate Lee Renaldo.
Moore is undoubtedly an artist who never followed the normal musical paths and it shows in every aspect of his career, from political statements like "Smash the PMRC" to his eccentric musical taste both in collecting and in releasing recordings for his tiny label Ecstatic Peace.

A true testament to Moore's limitless talent, Hearts is chock full of flavorful treasures and only further proves that Thurston Moore is Sonic Youth.
With the flip of a switch and a turn of the dial, Moore converts the dissonant wail of feedback into an eerie musical tapestry which reaches deep into the listener's soul.
Moore ends a magnificent album with a instrumental masterpiece that is 20 minutes long with numerous distinct and repetitive segments.

Sonic Youth / Ciccone Youth / Thurston Moore: Sonic Youth / The Whitey Album / Psychic Hearts: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
On the track, Moore's vocals are haunting and urgent, like he's pinned to a mattress on the floor of his East Village apartment: "I'm not afraid to say I'm scared/ In my bed I'm deep in prayer/ I trust the speed/ I love the fear."
Moore's vocals are also particularly swoon-worthy on the whispery "Pretty Bad" and breathy "Ono Soul".
The noise implosions of its final third are anti-climactic, but after some gentle plucks and slides, Moore grabs his pick and glides into that dark night as gorgeously as he began, only this time with more triumphal drums.

Treble: Thurston Moore - Psychic Hearts
Thurston Moore, however, is the only one to have a solo "pop" record to his credit, 1995's Psychic Hearts, an album that still isn't necessarily radio friendly, but acts as an interesting and accessible bridge between Sonic Youth's Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star and Washing Machine albums.
What Moore presented on Psychic Hearts is a characteristically abrasive, yet extremely song-oriented collection, and one that holds up so well after all this time, that one certainly must wonder how Geffen ever let this go out of print in the first place.
Thurston Moore didn't really put out any other records that sound like Psychic Hearts, which is a shame really—it's damn good.

Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, former apprentices of "guitar-symphony" composer Glenn Branca and founding guitarists of Sonic Youth, have constantly fiddled with their tunings and amp settings to create chords and textures unlike any others in pop music.
Moore is not much of a singer, though he tries to compensate for that by cloaking his vocals in effects and burying them in the mix.
This is primo Thurston at his best, with the exception of the rather blown out "Elegy for all the dead rock stars", dribbling along for 20 minutes.

Thurston Moore : Klangfarbenmelodie...And the Colorist Strikes Primitiv
The listener should not expect the sweet psychedelic pop of his Psychic Hearts album of the same year; rather, Moore explores his interest in freeform improvisation on this live set recorded in 1994.
The recording is incredibly lo-fi, but that adds to the CD's candid charm, as his guitar thrashing reaches peaks of noise only hinted at in early Sonic Youth.

His first solo album, Psychic Hearts (recorded during and immediately after his wife and Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon's pregnancy in 1994), with ex-Half Japanese guitarist Tim Foljahn and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, had an appropriately offhand feel but was far from sloppy.

 * Dusted Reviews - Wally Shoup / Paul Flaherty / Thurston Moore / Chris Corsano *
On this gig recorded at Tonic, the Lower East Side’s venerable house of all things noisy, Shoup was joined by Paul Flaherty on tenor sax (and a bit of alto as well), Flaherty’s frequent New England-based collaborator Chris Corsano on drums, and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, a downtown institution in his own right, on guitar.
Like a Whack-A-Mole game at an amusement park, my original skepticism about Moore’s ability to hang was given a sharp blow on the head with a giant foam bat.
Shoup and Flaherty and Moore and Corsano wouldn’t have forgotten, though, because every detail of this package radiates focus, from the cover art to the wild freakouts that never repeat themselves, right down to the deliberately warm and enveloping moment that occurs fifteen minutes and thirty seconds into the second set.
