Thyreophora (thye-ree-OFF-or-ah) is one of three suborders of Ornithischia.
Thyreophora is generally broken into two infraorders: the Ankylosauria, and the Stegosauria.
(Thyreophora also included ceratopsians when the group was originally proposed in 1915.) The family of Scelidosauridae has been included in the Thyreophora.

Thyreophora comprises Stegosauria and Ankylosauria and a handful of stem taxa, but despite their public appeal, fossils of these animals are comparatively rare.
Recent years have seen a revival in the study of Thyreophora, especially fueled by the description of a number of new ankylosaurian taxa by the book’s editor Ken Carpenter and various colleagues.
The two chapters also indicate that thyreophoran jaw mechanics were not uniform and that a detailed and comparative study across Thyreophora promises to be a fruitful field for future studies.

Sereno (1999) currently places virtually all of the fabrosaur material in the basal Thyreophora, although he omits any discussion of Echinodon itself in the most recent study.
Tatisaurus is the earliest known member of the Thyreophora It is still not very far removed from its fabrosaur-like ancestors, but within a few million years Tatisaurus, or a form like it, evolved into large armoured quadrupeds, the scelidosaurs.

The most well known thyreophora dinosaurs are the stegosaurus and the ankylosaurus.
As you can see from the pictures the stuctures on the backs of these two dinosaurs are very different.
The stegosaurus has the plated structure and the ankylosaurus has the armored sturucture and this is how they group thyreophora dinosaurs.

The Thyreophora have osteoderms (bones in the skin) as rows on the back or sides.
The stegosaurs have one or more rows of armor plates or spikes in the skin above or alongside the vertebral column.
But this dinosaur did have bony plates covering part of the body, thus its placement in the Thyreophora.
