THYSANOPTERA - LoveToKnow Article on THYSANOPTERA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The term Thysanoptera was first used by the Irish entomologist A. Haliday (1836), who made a careful study of the British species and recognized that their structural peculiarities required ordinal separation.
Thysanoptera are found on the leaves and in the blossoms of plants.
While the majority of the Thysanoptera are thus vegetarian in their diet, and are frequently injurious in farm and garden, some species, at least occasionally, adopt a predaceous habit, killing aphids and small mites (so-called red-spiders) and sucking their juices.

 Thysanoptera
The name Thysanoptera, derived from the Greek "thysanos" meaning fringe and "ptera" meaning wings, refers to the slender wings that bear a dense fringe of long hairs.
Although Thysanoptera are hemimetabolous, many species undergo an extended metamorphosis in which the final immature stage is quiescent, non-feeding, and sometimes even enclosed in a silken cocoon.
Thrips are able to walk on glassy smooth surfaces because they have an eversible adhesive pad located on the tip of each foot, between the claws.

 CSIRO Entomology - Thysanoptera [Thrips]
Whereas in Hemimetabola there is progressive development of nymphs to adults, and in Holometabola there is a massive reorganisation of the body during the single pupal stage from the larval to the adult condition, all Thysanoptera have either two or three pupal stages despite the two larval stages having the general appearance of adults.
The tarsi of adult Thysanoptera have an eversible bladder-like arolium that enables them to cling to surfaces, in much the same way as members of the Diptera.
Although adults of many Thysanoptera species are wingless, typical adults have wings that bear long marginal fringes, although similar wings occur in many other minute insects including the smallest moths and wasps.

Dispersal of adult western flower thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in greenhouse crops
Abstract: This study characterized the spatial distribution of adult western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), released at the centres of greenhouses stocked with either cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. (Cucurbitaceae)) or chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora (Tzelev) (Asteraceae)) plants.
Experiments conducted using either adults marked with fluorescent powder or unmarked adults revealed that the density of females per plant decreased as an inverse function of the distance from the release point.
