Duesseldorf, Aug 9: German steel giants Thyssen AG and Fried Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp on Saturday declined to comment on a report that senior management had agreed a massive merger of the two groups.
Thyssen management board chairman, Dieter Vogel, met with his counterpart at Krupp, Gerhard Cromme, along with other board members from the two groups, to discuss a complete merger of the two groups, Der Spiegel said in a report issued in advance of publication.
This was agreed after Krupp announced a hostile takeover of its archrival Thyssen in March, which met with the resistance of Thyssen workers and German political leaders.

Thyssen Krupp's bid is an attempt to thwart a complex string of events ranging from the spinoff of Atecs Mannesmann AG, that planned merger of the Atecs VDO business with Siemens Automotive AG and an IPO of the entire Atecs unit due later in 2000.
The Thyssen Krupp opening bid of € 7.5 billion ($7.3 billion) forced the board to consider it, but some sources belive the ultimate price could be pushed as high as € 9 billion ($8.75 billion).
It is also a significant victory for Thyssen because everything about the Atecs VDO / Siemens joint venture had been decided and was actually in process - from the price tag all the way down to where the corporate headquarters would be located in Frankfurt to the management team.

Thyssen-Krupp AG ThyssenKrupp and One Equity Partners (OEP) signed an agreement on October 7, 2004, regarding the formation of an alliance of shipyards according to which ThyssenKrupp Werften and Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) will merge to form a new group under the command of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG.
The agreement stipulates that in return for the 100 percent in HDW AG, OEP receives a 25-percent stake in ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG plus a payment of 220 million euros to be funded from the cash resources of the new shipyard group.
The merger will be consummated as soon as the relevant supervisory boards and antitrust authorities have given their go-aheads.
