TiHKAL - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TiHKAL is a 1997 book written by Alexander Shulgin and Ann Shulgin about a family of psychoactive drugs known as tryptamines.
These essays range from psychotherapy and the Jungian mind to the prevalence of DMT in nature, Ayahuasca and the War on Drugs.
The second part of TiHKAL is a detailed synthesis manual for 55 psychedelic compounds (many invented by Alexander Shulgin), with dosages, chemical structure and qualitative comments.

I would like to take a moment to reiterate that at the present time restrictive laws are in force in the United States and it is very difficult for researchers to abide by the regulations which govern efforts to obtain legal approval to do work with these compounds in human beings.....
No one who is lacking legal authorization should attempt the synthesis of any of the compounds described in these files, with the intent to give them to man. To do so is to risk legal action which might lead to the tragic ruination of a life.

TIHKAL: The Continuation. - book reviews Whole Earth - Find Articles
Let's begin with the title: TIHKAL stands for "Tryptamines I Have Known And Loved," and is the continuation of the Shulgins' earlier book, PIHKAL, "Phenethylamines I Have Known And Loved." Both books occupy that most special "short shelf " reserved for books that any serious student of the subject must have.
The first half of the book is prose written in the voices of "Alice" and "Shura," characters bearing so much resemblance to the authors that the "fictionalization," a la Jack Kerouac, may not extend beyond changes in proper names.
TIHKAL is a violation of genre: it mixes science and soul -- and thus both parts of the work are given a context.

The question is simple enough - I'd like to hear from anyone who owns/has read Shulgin's TIHKAL and/or PIHKAL - how did you like the book(s) that you read, and which one do you recommend someone to buy first, or does it really not matter?
