Tiamat (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tiamat is a band from Sweden that was formed in Stockholm, in 1988.
The band's music has been described variously as gothic metal, doom metal, and symphonic metal, due to some variances in sound throughout their discography.
After Sumerian Cry (which was the first Tiamat album, but written while under the name Treblinka), Edlund's leadership modified the sound with moody, atmospheric textures and vocals that would attribute them (along with Samael and Rotting Christ) as one of the starters of dark metal and symphonic fl metal.

Tiamat is a Swedish band that has evolved from being one of a thousand ordinary death metal bands to a unique atmospheric gothic metal band.
Tiamat was originally formed under the name Treblinka in 1988 by vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Johan Edlund, at that time going by the name Hellslaughter.
Tiamat was now taking a big step from death towards doom metal with classical rock riffs and atmospheric keyboards.

 Tiamat: Atmospheric Metal/Dark Rock
Tiamat songs are uncomplicated in their primary structure, relying on the stability of clearly defined verse/chorus arrangements, while weaving a ceremonial atmosphere through hovering keyboards, acoustic guitars, and transcendental guitar leads.
With this effort, the primary purpose of Tiamat becomes abundantly clear, as the disc flows in an uninterrupted stream of sound collages and atmospherics, adopting the approach to album construction formatted by progressive rock bands of the 1970s in which records were structured as an entire experience rather than a collection of individual songs.
Any creative energy the band maintained on the previous work is gone, and Tiamat now seem concerned with making simple music without spirit for mainstream consumption, dressed up with "dark" imagery to give off the impression that this still somehow connects the band with their past or with some sense of mystery.

Over the course of the 1990s Sweden's Tiamat evolved from a typical Death Metal outfit into a leader of what some call "symphonic" Black Metal, its aim is to keep all of Death Metal's darkness intact, but keep it more subtle and moodier, in other words with more gothic touch.
The only one constant throughout Tiamat's history has been vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Johan Edlund, by 1997 he was the only official member of the band so I won't even bother to list all the myriad lineup changes.
Tiamat released their debut album, Sumerian Cry, in 1990, the album was not especially noteworthy and only worth buying if you really must have all Tiamat's albums.

Tiamat grew out of a splatter-metal band called Treblinka, which was formed in 1988 and released two demos (Crawling in Vomits and Sign of the Pentagram) that helped secure a deal with England's CMFT label.
Electing to change their name to Tiamat (an ancient Middle Eastern goddess of chaos and a five-headed dragon in the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game), the group released their debut album, Sumerian Cry, in 1990, with a lineup of Edlund, bassist Jorgen "Juck" Thullberg, and session musicians Stefan "Emetic" Lagergren (guitar) and Andres "Najse" Holmberg.
Dissatisfied with the album's distribution, Tiamat jumped to the Century Media label, completing their official lineup with guitarist Thomas Petersson and drummer Niklas Ekstrand.

I get really annoyed with bands that decide to make DVDs at the very early stages of their career, and unfortunately at the moment, there are many of them out there.
One band that really deserves to enrich their discography with such a release is definitely Tiamat.
What I really like about Tiamat's performance in "The Church Of Tiamat" is the fact that they have managed to re-create this unique dark atmosphere that has been their trademark since the early 90's while quite skilfully performing their amazing compositions, and in an ideal environment like that in Krakow, the result was mind-blowing.

Some bands don't evolve very well and fizzle out, some try to sell out and compromise their style, but Tiamat has done neither.
I started this review by comparing the band to Pink Floyd; while the band obviously has their own style, they still derive a lot of their influence from the aforementioned.

Enigmatic and prone to sudden mutations, the long and winding road that Tiamat has followed is difficult to trace with any sort of descriptive clarity, yet there appears to be a logic of development, however obscure, that guides the band’s pursuits and provides those threads of continuity linking all of the band’s albums.
At the creative core of Tiamat’s sound is a fascination with the interplay of light and dark musical hues, of investigating how different sonic shades may commingle in dynamic fashion on the same canvas, without losing their essential properties.
Throughout each and every Tiamat album, this light-dark opposition has assumed a slightly different guise, providing the reference points upon which the band’s vibrantly atmospheric songs are articulated.
