The Republics - Respublica Septimontiana   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The (First) Roman Republic was a phase of the ancient Roman civilization characterized by a republican form of government.
The Roman Republic flag was a vertical tricolour fl-white-red, taken from the French tricolour, as granted by Napoleon.
One of the major innovations the Republic hoped to achieve was enshrined in its constitution; all religions could be practiced freely and the pope was guaranteed the right to govern the Catholic Church.

They were supposed to be sacrificed to the god but the ritual wasn't carried out, and the two boys were abandoned and found by a wolf, who nursed them until their adoption by a shepherd, who named them Romulus and Remus.
The crowning a couple of centuries later of Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor, with dominions spread Europe-wide but answerable to the pope, intensified the city's revival, and the pope and city became recognized as head of the Christian world.
Thirty-four years later a pro-Unification caucus under Mazzini declared the city a republic but was soon chased out, and Rome had to wait until Garibaldi stormed the walls in 1870 to join the unified country - the last but symbolically most important part of the Italian peninsula to do so.

 French client republic
The French Republic claimed to support the spread of the republican principles in Europe, but most of these republics, known as French client republics or Sister republics, where just a way to control the occupied lands through a mix of direct French control and local government.
The republics typically based their existence on the presence of the Napoleonic Army; on the other side, the French administration often ruled with the only purpose of draining as many resources (food, money and soldiers) as possible for the benefit of France.
The institution of republican governments, promoting nationality over the rule of the royal families (Bourbons, Habsburgs) set the stage for the appearance of nationalist sentiment in all Europe, which significantly influenced the course of European history (see 1830 and Revolutions of 1848).

However, it soon became apparent that there was only room for one ruler, and, unable to agree on the signs given to them by the gods, they quarreled, Romulus killing Remus and becoming in 753 BC the city's first monarch, to be followed by six further kings.
The city prospered under the Republic, growing greatly in size and subduing the various tribes of the surrounding areas - the Etruscans to the north, the Sabines to the east, the Samnites to the south.
By the time it had fought and won the third Punic War against its principal rival, Carthage, in 146 BC, it had become the dominant power in the Mediterranean.

(tradition dates it to 753) near the Isola Tiberina, perhaps on the Palatine Hill, it was at first a monarchy until Tarquinius Superbus, the last king, was expelled and it became a Republic (509 BC.).
Subsequently, Rome was always subject to the power of the Papacy, alternating darker periods, such as the exile of the Pontiff to Avignone (1305-1370) and the Western schism (1378-1414), with others of great urban, artistic and cultural development, most importantly the Renaissance, mainly associated with Pope Julius II.
After the Napoleonic period (1798-1799 and 1809-1815) the town was the scene of Risorgimento turmoil, such as the proclamation of the Roman Republic in 1848, upheld by Mazzini, and the attempt on it by Garibaldi, thwarted at Mentana in 1867.

The thorn was donated by Carlo Fortebraccio, the military commander who defeated the Turks that were attacking the dominions of the Republic of Venice.

Building and engineering in Ancient Rome
The Appian way is considered the first of the Roman roads, particularly because of the new conception of direct means communications.
It was in fact preceded by two existing routes to the north of Rome: the Via Tiberina and the Via Salaria, both of which are rather more tortuous as they followed the Tiber valley.
The first derived its name from the Tiber itself whilst the second gained its name from the Sabine salt trade (sale=salt) which moved along it (the myth of the Roman rape of the Sabine women seems to be an allusion to the Roman taking of the profitable salt trade).

Strabo tells us that their lands were "straordinariemente ricco di olivi e di viti", and it was this agricultural wealth still so evident today that made the Sabina so important to Rome.
This was the case in particular of the Sabina tiberina with its villae rusticae and the small urban centres of Cures, Eretum, Trebula Mutuesca and Forum Novum.
During the Republic and early Empire the majority of the agricultural produce of the Sabina tiberina was directed to the Imperial city, transported either by land along major roads such as the Via Salaria or by the region's communication route par excellence, the Tiber.
