Nearly a decade later, a more mature Meth sits at the soundboard in Daddy's House recording studio, where he is working on his latest album, Tical 0: The Prequel, and acknowledges that he had some real problems back in the day.
It's like ignorance was bliss for me in those years," remembered Method Man, looking back on the days of his first solo album, Tical (1994), and his group the Wu-Tang Clan's first album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993).

The album's production (like the first wave of Wu solo releases) was handled by the RZA, and it oozes with all the moody samples and trash-can break beats that defined Return to the 36 Chambers.
After completing a round of solo albums, and a second group album (Wu-Tang Forever), the Wu expanded their reach by giving shine to their disciples.

Meth's 'stick out' factor is that this first album (and the slightly underachieving Tical 2000) feature a sort of bleak, almost gothic sound, and this is how it is intended, for if you read the booklet supplied in the CD you'll see various pictures of Mr.
'Tical' is a very good rap album and was something of a godsend when released in 1994.
Buying this album won't enhance your rep and you certainly won't be able to play this album at some middle class dinner party to look 'cool' in front of your convival company.

:: MVRemix Reviews: Method Man - Tical 0: The Prequel ::
"Tical 0" is a formulaic album that was made specifically to move units, not to appeal to Method's hardcore fan base.
However, Method Man can't pass off all the blame, as his performances on this and the majority of the album are proof of his deteriorating skills over the years.
Saying the production on "Tical 0" is the worst to come along in the last 5 years would be an understatement, as Method Man's beat selection could only be outdone by a deaf man.

Method Man : Tical 2000: Judgement Day - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Method Man's second solo recording is a harder album than his debut, much more focused on rap than the frequent R&B excursions that hit the pop charts on the original Tical.
Though the emphasis on the hardcore makes for a better album, Method Man's own raps are often diluted by the staggering number of collaborations; as usual, almost all of the songs have guests, including Raekwon, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Mobb Deep, Redman, Left Eye (from TLC), Streetlife, Cappadonna, Ed Lover and D'Angelo.
Between the skits, intros, outros and cameos is an excellent album just waiting to be pruned down.

I don't know who chose Tical 2000's lead singles, but fortunately, the randb sounds of the D'Angelo collabo are not representative of the album; neither are the high BPMs of MTV-mainstay "Judgement Day" (although all the album artwork does seem to be taken entirely from that video shoot).
The album features several skits featuring famous people (Ed Lover, Janet Jackson and Donald Trump?!) asking when the new album's dropping -- but on the real, not everybody was really checking for Meth this time around.
But with this second album, Meth has to prove more than his originality -- he has to legitimize his ghetto superstar status.

 Tical by Method Man CD
The anxiously-awaited TICAL humbly portrays Method Man's capability to "impregnate the rhythm with the wisdom." But his bravest move, in the midst of street-tough raps that promise to "Bring The Pain," is to offer a hardcore love song.
TICAL, then, is basically the "return of the Wu-Tang" in the form of the Meth.
On TICAL, he drops a discordant, two-note piano all over "What The Blood Clot," and a loud, wandering electric piano line which competes with the vocals in the mix of "Biscuits," offering a sort of hip-hop analogy for buzzing lo-fi guitars.

 Wu-Tang Clan (and solo work)
While RZA's first album as super-antihero Bobby Digital was a groove-heavy break from his usual approach to hip-hop, this disc is a return to the dense insanity of his mid-90s work: incongrous loop combinations, irresistable beats, pounding piano - even the squeaky violin, MIA since 1997, makes a triumphant return on "Do U" (featuring GZA).
Ghostface's lines on Raekwon's album weren't extraordinary, but he makes up for it here, bursting out with complex wordplay and surprising humor (who else would compare himself and his girlfriend to Luke and Laura?) in the service of a generally positive vision ("Black Jesus").
But the album is padded out with unsurprising remixes of familiar hits like "4th Chamber," "Wu-Gambinos" and "Cold World," leaving a sour taste in your mouth.

Despite Meth’s recent interview claims to the contrary, this album suffers from a lack of focus (quite worrying for an album which was supposed to be tied up with a concept of a pre-fame Method Man).
The intricacies of who's to blame aren’t the issue here though, the facts stand that this album is 80% total shite, and Meth recorded it and then Def Jam released it; they’re both at fault.
