TICINUM - LoveToKnow Article on TICINUM
The branch to Eporedia must have been constructed before 100 B.C. Ticinum is not infrequently mentioned by classical writers.
It was a municipium, and from an inscription we know that a triumphal arch was erected in honor of Augustus and his family, but we learn little of it except that in the 4th century A.D. there was a manufacture of bows there.
Of Roman remains little is preservedthere is, for example, no sufficient proof that the cathedral rests upon an ancient temple of Cybelethough the regular ground plan of the central portion, a square of some 1150 yds., betrays its Roman origin, and it may have sprung from a military camp.

Benevento - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 758, Desiderius, king of the Lombards, briefly captured Spoleto and Benevento, but with the collapse of the Lombard kingdom in 773, Duke Arechi II was elevated to Prince under the new empire of the Franks, in compensation for having some of his territory transferred to the Papal States.
Benevento was acclaimed by a chronicler as a "second Pavia"— Ticinum geminum— after the Lombard capital was lost.
Arechi expanded the Roman city, with new walled enclosures extending onto the level ground southwest of the old city, where Arechi razed old constructions for a new princely palace, whose open court is still traceable in the Piano di Corte of the acropolis.
