The first USS Ticonderoga was a 17-gun schooner of Commodore Thomas Macdonough's flotilla in the victorious Battle of Lake Champlain on 11 September 1814.
The second USS Ticonderoga was a steam sloop-of-war which served with distinction during the Civil War.
It was to become the lead ship of the Ticonderoga class, though it and other ships of this class are often subsumed into the Essex class carriers.
