Topic: Tidal basin

Tidal Energy - Putting The Ocean To Work
Tidal energy is a vastly untapped resource for providing renewal energy to nations that border upon an ocean, gulf or sea.
The dam includes a sluice that is opened to allow the tide to flow into the basin; the sluice is then closed, and as the sea level drops, traditional hydropower technologies can be used to generate electricity from the elevated water in the basin.
The offshore turbines have the advantage of not being detrimental to sensitive estuaries as the barrage method (dam across a tidal basin) has been acknowledged to be.

Tidal energy traditionally involves erecting a dam across the opening to a tidal basin.
The energy potential of tidal basins is large — the largest facility, the La Rance station in France, generates 240 megawatts of power.
Tidal energy systems can have environmental impacts on tidal basins because of reduced tidal flow and silt buildup.

Tidal Basin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tidal Basin is a partially man-made inlet adjacent to the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. It is part of West Potomac Park and is surrounded by the Jefferson Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.
The concept of the Tidal Basin originated in the 1880’s to serve both as a visual centerpiece and as a means for flushing the Washington Channel, a harbor separated from the Potomac River by fill lands where East Potomac Park is situated.
The basin is designed to release 250 million gallons of water captured at high tide twice a day.

 Tidal Power
Tidal and current streams are the effects of the solar energy and the moons gravitational force acting on the earth’s surface.
The energy potential of tidal basins is large but they can have environmental impacts on tidal basins resulting in reduced tidal flow and sediment buildup.
Tidal stream technology is at the very early stages of development though and will require significantly more research before it becomes a significant contributor to electrical generation needs.

Tidal electricity generation involves the construction of a barrage across an estuary to block the incoming and outgoing tide.
Tidal power utilises the twice daily variation in sea level caused primarily by the gravitational effect of the Moon and, to a lesser extent the Sun on the world's oceans.
Tidal power is not a new concept and has been used since at least the 11th Century in Britain and France for the milling of grains.

There are two main types of tidal power systems available; the shore-based system that is driven by the rising and lowering tides within the narrow channels of estuaries or basins and the sea-based systems that rely on ocean currents.
Once the basin has filled to its highest level the sluices close, effectively trapping the water in the tidal basin.
The tidal fence acts in much the same manner as a barrage in that it must be placed across a channel.

Basin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sedimentary basin, a low and usually sinking region that is filled with sediments from adjacent positive areas
Basin may be a downdropped fault block, or graben, which fill with sediments
Basin, or dock, used for the reception of boats, in which the water level is maintained; see also tidal basin and canal basins

 Tidal Electric - Technology
Early tidal power plants utilized naturally-occurring tidal basins by building a barrage (dam) across the opening of the basin and allowing the basin to fill on the rising tide, impounding the water as the tide fell, and then releasing the impounded water through a waterwheel, paddlewheeel or similar energy-conversion device.
A barrage re-times the tidal cycle and changes the water levels, thereby “moving” the wet/dry intertidal zone, obliging the plant and animal life to adapt or “move” to the new location.
The humans living around the headpond of the tidal barrage in Annapolis Royale, Canada, have limited the functioning of the barrage so as to maintain water levels that are nearly normal, but at a cost of about 50% of the potential output of the 16-megawatt unit.

Tidal energy can be exploited in two ways: (1) By building semi-permeable barrages across estuaries with a high tidal range.
Tidal streams can be harnessed using offshore underwater devices similar to wind turbines.
Tidal power is non-polluting, reliable and predictable.Tidal barrages, undersea tidal turbines - like wind turbines but driven by the sea - and a variety of machines harnessing undersea currents are under development.

Coastal America: Coastal Restoration and Protection Projects
Tidal flow would be introduced to the site by connecting the Fieldstone property via finger channels from the full tidal basin that will be created as part of the restoration of the adjacent 880 acres of the Bolsa Chica Lowlands.
To convey sea water from the new full tidal basin to the Fieldstone property, culverts would be constructed in the dike which would surround the full tidal basin.
The culverts would allow sea water to flow from the tidal basin into the channels on incoming tides and to drain back into the tidal basin on ebbing tides.

Plus, while tidal generators can tap the power of the tides, there is currently no really efficient way to store electricity.
When the tide is at its highest, the wall to this massive generator is lowered, allowing water to flow into the intakes, and raising the water level inside to rise.
Summary - a two mile square tidal trap split into two parts, the high-trap and the low trap; On high-tide, the high trap is filled, and on low-tide, the low-trap is emptied.

Basic flow field in a tidal basin
A simplified model for tidal flow in a basin is presented.
The model is based on the assumption of a flat water surface oscillating synchronously in the tidal basin.
This formulation, which is particularly valid for small, deep basins, provides a simplified solution of the depth-integrated shallow water equations and suggests a possible approach to model long-term morphodynamic evolution of tidal basins.

A simple representation for a tidal basin with freshwater input is described.
By assuming the conditions are well-mixed within the basin, it is possible to develop an elementary analysis for predicting salinities in the basin and sediment transport between the estuary and the basin due to density exchange flow.
The results of the analysis are presented in a generalized manner and this enables first estimates for some prototype situations to be made easily and with a minimal amount of field data.
