Tide   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Tidal Lag and the transfer of momentum between sea and land causes the Earth's rotation to slow down and the Moon to be moved further away in a process known as tidal acceleration.
Tidal heights are also very important; for example many rivers and harbours have a shallow "bar" at the entrance which will prevent boats with significant draught from entering at certain states of the tide.
Tidal charts come in sets, each one of the set covering a single hour between one high Tide and another (they ignore the extra 24 minutes) and give the average tidal flow for that one hour.

The race forms a natural breakwater across the firth, and even when the race is most violent the firth can be crossed E of the breakers in smooth conditions.
The race forms off the Men of Mey rocks and initially extends W towards Dunnet Head, but as the W-going stream increases in strength the race begins to extend from the bank 1½ miles NW off St John's Point in a NNW direction.
During the E-going and W-going tidal streams races will form, respectively SE and SW of the Tails of The Tarf on the edge of eddies E and W of Swona; where they may become violent when wind is opposed to the tidal stream.

Tidal currents are strongest in the middle of the tidal changes, and weakest as the ebb and flow points of each change are reached.
On Sunday morning, however, with the tide starting to go out and against the race direction, the winds were a cross-tailwind from the starboard stern, reducing or eliminating the advantage usually enjoyed by lanes 1 and 2.
By the time of the Jessop-Whittier and Copley finals at the end of racing, the wind was quartering slightly from the port stern, but still not giving the inside lanes their normal advantage to the same degree as is normally the case.

 Marine Energy - Tidal Power
Although the marine tidal turbine technologies tend to follow the same lines as wind turbines, due to the greater energy density (up to 4 times that of air) and hence power available in ocean currents, these devices can be much smaller than their Aeolian counterparts.
Tidal power is more dependable than wind due to its predictable nature thus making it a better source of electrical energy for feeding the baseload of the national grid.
In his recent paper 'Tidal Stream Power from the Gulf of Corryvrecken' Sandy Small of Glasgow's College of Nautical Studies suggests that Argyll's famous whirlpool between the islands of Jura and Scarba could be harnessed using tidal devices to produce up to 2 GW of renewable electricity.

Tidal race - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tidal race (or tidal rapid) is a natural occurrence whereby a fast moving tide passes through constriction resulting in the formation of waves, eddies and hazardous currents.
The contraction can be a passage where the sides narrow, for example the Gulf of Corryvreckan, or an underwater obstruction such as a reef or rising seabed, such as the Portland Race.
In extreme cases, such as Skookumchuck Narrows in British Columbia, through which tides can travel at more than 17 knots, very large whirlpools form which are extreme hazards to navigation.

Visitors to the region speak in wonder of the "tidal bore," a small but fast-moving wave of water that is the face of the tide.
Each day as the tide comes in, the tidal bore races across the the mud flats and up the Bay's coves and rivers, in turn bearing a rich load of nutrients back into the Gulf as it ebbs.
During each tidal cycle, huge quantities of fine sediments are brought in to flood the coastal area.

The waves formed by this race form a natural breakwater with relatively calm water to the east of it, particularly noticeable when a westerly swell is running.
The race temporarily ceases at the turn of the tide before forming in an ENE direction in the NW going tidal stream (Ebb) before ceasing again at the next turn of the tide.
The race is particularly violent and dangerous when the tidal stream is opposed by gales in the opposite direction.

The seabed generators consist of an array of massive propellers that are spun around as the tidal flow rushes past and drive a dynamo that produces energy.
They operate on the same principle as wind turbines, but tidal power stations have the advantage of producing a constant stream of power because of the reliability of the Moon’s gravitational tug every 12 hours.

The energy potential of fast-flowing tidal currents around the British Isles was the subject of an ETSU study in 1993, which concluded that tidal current power could supply a major proportion of the UK's electricity requirement.
Because water is much denser than air, a tidal turbine running in a 4 knot tidal stream will deliver power for nearly 7 times as many houses as the same size wind turbine running in a 20 knot breeze.
Small scale tidal stream devices which will operate in shallow water are also evolving and these have the potential to service compact waterside residential or industrial development.

There is no doubt about it - tonight's results represent a tidal wave in Ohio (and perhaps national) politics.
On the other, I'm concerned that, as in the presidential race (via the exit polls), everything seemed to be going the way of the Democratic candidate until the last minute.
Basically, I was thinking today that a victory by Hackett could be cited as evidence that the "moderate" and statist/neocon policies of the GOP Establishment were costly to our party, and this would undermine claims of a "mandate" for said policies, which was claimed by some following the 2004 elections...

The tidal turbines and wind turbines combined would provide plenty of power for distribution throughout Scotland.
The powerful tidal races and tidal streams of the Pentland Firth, unique in the UK, can be thus harnessed with many side benefits.
