After removing the unit from the truck, I marked the limits of the rod on the garage floor so that I could get the new ends in the same position on the tie rod (keeping the effective length the same).
I then used a vice to hold the tie rod and a pair of pipe wrenches to turn the ends and to hold lever against/hold the tie rod.

The third picture is what happens to my tie rod ends when the tie rod doesn't move and forces all the pressure on to the tie rod end.

The "bolts" that hold the tie rods to the bracket are actually splined studs pressed into a small plate that sits between the inner tie rod ends and the body of the rack-- there is not enough clearance to push the plate back far enough to dislodge the studs from the inner tie rod ends.
To remove either tie rod assembly, you must first remove the bracket the tie rod bolt to from the rack.
tie rods are much more accessable not to mension the center diff lock actuator on the later cars.

Rod End Operating Angle with Spacer Shim: 20deg from center (on a 360 degree rotational axis) 20 degrees of offset angle equates into 29" of overall travel (40deg) at the end of a 41" center to center drag link.
Adjust the length of the tie rod by loosening the jam nuts till you have the correct distance.

To seperate the tie rod end from the spindle remove the nut and use a 3 pound mall and hit the spindle where the tie rod slips into it.:smash: It is a taper fit and a few good whacks will loosen the fit and it will fall right out.
Pickle forks are okay as long as 1) the mount eye is not attached to anything with a bearing (such as the steering gear/pitman arm) because you can ruin the bearing etc, and 2) as long as you are not going to re-use the grease boot (the fork usually rips the boot).
