Xia (Sixteen Kingdoms) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tiefu (Simplified Chinese: 铁弗, Traditional Chinese: 鐵弗; pinyin: Tiěfú) was a pre-state Xiongnu tribe during the era of Sixteen Kingdoms in China.
The Liu (Dugu) were also known as Tiefu 铁弗, a term which meant that they had Xiongnu fathers and Xianbei mothers.

The northern Tiefu 鐵弗 branch of the Xiongnu gained control of the Inner Mongolian region in the 10 years between the conquest of the Tuoba Xianbei state of Dai by the Former Qin empire in 376, and its restoration in 386 as the Northern Wei.
After 386, the Tiefu were gradually destroyed by or surrendered to the Tuoba, with the submitting Tiefu becoming known as the Dugu 獨孤.
Liu Bobo 劉勃勃, a surviving prince of the Tiefu fled to the Ordos Loop, where he founded a state called the Xia (thus named because of the Xiongnu's supposed ancestry from the Xia dynasty) and changed his surname to Helian 赫連.

The dating of the Chu graves of Changsha
Gu Tiefu therefore considers that this oldest type of mirror cannot be later than the beginning of the Warring States period.
Gu Tiefu's article established the two basic assumptions which have been applied in later attempts at a relative chronology of the Chu graves of Changsha: small graves are earlier than large graves, and graves containing li-cauldrons are earlier than those containing ding-cauldrons.

The Dugu/Liu: Were they Xiongnu or Xianbei? - China History Forum, chinese history forum
The Tiefu Xiongnu who had surrendered with Liu Peini were renamed as the Dugu - this may have been a variant of 'Tuge', which was the Xiongnu tribe from which the ruling Luanti clan came.
The genealogy claims that Liu Jinbo, a descendant of the first Eastern Han emperor Liu Xiu, was captured by the Xiongnu during a military campaign, and that Jinbo's son founded the Dugu tribe among the Xiongnu.
It then equates the Tiefu Xiongnu with the Dugu tribe, with Liu Qubei (Right Virtuous King of the Southern Xiongnu in the 180s) and Liu Meng (who was actually Qubei's son, not his brother) as the great-grandsons of Liu Jinbo.

Most of Liu Kuren's Tiefu branch was either defeated or surrendered to the Tuoba over the next few years, and those Tiefu under Tuoba rule adopted the clan name Dugu 独孤.
Historical data (Annals of Wei State?) says that Tiefu 铁弗 means a man born between Sianbi (i.e.Mongol)mother and Hun father or vice versa.

Following the defeat of the Xiongnu by the Han, there was a century without significant Xiongnu references, followed by attempts by the Liu family of southern Xiongnu Tiefu to establish a state in western China (see Han Zhao).
The Romans invited the Huns east of the Ukraine to settle Pannonia in 361, and in 372, under the leadership of Balimir their king, the Huns pushed towards the west and defeated the Alans.
Back east again, in the early 5th century Tiefu Xia is the last southern Xiongnu dynasty in Western China and the Alchon/Hunas appear in what is now Afghanistan and Pakistan.
