  About Susato...
Susato is the brand name that we use for marketing many of the instruments that we manufacture in-house.
The name comes from the Renaissance composer, publisher and musician Tielman Susato (1500-1562).
He most likely came from the same area in Germany, (Soest in Westphalia) that much of the Kelischek family is from.

TIELMAN SUSATO   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Susato's settings are different in a number of ways from those of other dance publications of the period.
Another aspect of Susato's fast-changing harmonic style is the use of E minor chords in Dorian pieces that produce interesting false relations, the B natural in the E chord being followed immediately by a B flat in another part (see no. 15).
Although it is unlikely that Susato intended his particular arrangements for professional dance musicians, he may have been influenced by the traditions of the town bands, who must have been in the habit of transposing much of their music up a fifth.

Susato, Tielman (c.1500-c.1561)   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The birthplace or date of Tielman Susato is unknown, our clear knowledge of him starts in 1529 when he was working as a calligrapher in Antwerp Cathedral.
The date of his death is unclear, but he passed on his publishing business to his son, Jacques, but he too was to die two or three years after his father in 1564.
Susato was not a great composer in the accepted sense of that term, but he does represent one of the few Flemish composers of the period, and as such is an important figure in relating the music of his region.

 Tielman Susato - Cunnan
Tielman Susato was an important Renaissance Musician, and composed a lot of Renaissance Dance music and other secular music.
Many of his published works are arrangements of pieces by other musicians -- the laws of copyright were fairly flimsy in the Renaissance and the printing press allowed fairly wide distribution of works fairly quickly.
There are many available recordings of Susato's work, especially by specialist early music publishers such as Naxos.

Amazon.ca: Tielman Susato: Dansereye 1551: Music: Tylman Susato,New London Consort   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Tielman Susato is listed as the name on this collection, not because he was the composer, but because in addition to being a composer, Susato's primary business for many years was as a publisher of music.
This music comes from the book that he published on dance music - it was the only such book he produced, preferring polyphonic music, choral and church music to things like dance music.
Susato is most likely not the composer of most of the music (indeed, may not be composer of any), but put things into arrangements that has a sensitivity both to the dance aspects as well as the artistic merits of the music itself.
