Tierpark Hellabrunn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tierpark Hellabrunn is the name of the zoological garden in the Bavarian capital Munich.
On August 1, 1911, the zoo, planned by the famous architect Emanuel von Seidl, opened for the public for the first time, but in 1922, it had to be closed again due to the economy crisis.
After the re-opening on May 23, 1928, the Tierpark Hellabrunn became the first Geo-Zoo in the world and got plaudits for the re-breeding of extinct animals like the Aurochs and the Tarpan.

 MUNICHFOUND CITY MAGAZINE
From its humble beginnings in 1911 as Europe’s first GEO zoo, Tierpark Hellabrunn—which flanks the Isar just south of Munich’s inner city—has grown to become one of the most important wildlife centers on the continent.
The Tierpark Hellabrunn is made up of 15 “stations,” which follow a trail through woods, pastures, ponds and bridges over carp-filled streams.
Erected in 1980, Hellabrunn’s 5,000-sq-m aviary is a steel-and-net tent construction, which allows birds ample flight room and viewers a natural setting in which to view winged creatures ranging from songbirds and cranes to a talking raven (one rather vulgar word is a large part of his repertoire).

The Tarpan, Equus caballus gmelini, became extinct in 1880.
Its genetic line is lost, but a substitute has been recreated by "breeding back", crossing living domesticated horses that had features selected as primitive, thanks to the efforts of the brothers Lutz Heck (director of the Berlin zoo) and Heinz Heck (director of Tierpark Munich Hellabrunn).
The resulting animal is more properly called the Wild Polish Horse or Konik.

Breeds of Livestock - Tarpan Horse
They believed that all living creatures were the result of their genetic make-up and that genes could be rearranged like the pieces of a puzzle to recreate certain vanished species.
Mares from these breeds were then mated to Przewalski stallions because the Heck brothers felt that the blood of the wild Przewalski would serve as a catalyst to draw out the latent Tarpan characteristics dormant in these more modern breeds.
The first bred back Tarpan, a colt, was born May 22, 1933 at the Tierpark Hellabrunn in Munich, Germany.

The Przewalski horse and restoration to its natural habitat in Mongolia
No doubt, keeping such a rare animal as the Przewalski horse over several generations signifies a great obligation for a zoo and the main measure of the success of the management of this ancestor of our domestic horse is correlated with the breeding success of the herd.
If we compare the old pictures of these imports with a healthy yearling of today there is no doubt in the mind of a clinically experienced wild horse breeder, that all these animals were in a bad condition probably due to the long stressful transport and due to severe malnutrition.
Thanks to a problemless immobilization and the progress in sterility control we are able nowadays to avoid the loss of potential genetic material of a single mare suffering from β-haemolytic streptococci infection of the uterus.

To your left you find a couple of oddities.
For some reason the Hellabrunn people have tried to recreate the aurochs and the tarpan (an extinct wild horse) from modern cattle and modern horses.
But the 'aurochs' is not the massive animal it should be, and the 'tarpan' has a hanging mane, whereas the original had an upright mane like the przewalski horse just across the path, - maybe a strain of Prz in the so called tarpan would do the trick.
