The Auglaize River is a tributary of the Maumee River, approximately 100 mi (160 km) long, in northwestern Ohio in the United States.
During the days of the Ohio Country in the 18th century, the area around the river was inhabited by the Ottawa.
Fort Amanda, constructed along the river southwest of Lima in 1812, was an important American outpost during the War of 1812.

Edward Tiffin was born in Carlisle, England, on June 10, 1766, and attended the Latin school in that city.
Tiffin, like many other Virginians, felt the appeal of the West, and in 1798, emigrating with his family and that of Thomas Worthington and their recently manumitted colored servants, settled in the wilderness village of Chillicothe on the banks of the Scioto River in the Ohio country.
Tiffin, who was thirty-two years old at the time, has been described as a vivacious, florid-faced English gentleman of medium height with pleasant manners and extraordinary conversational powers.

Tiffin is situate on Sections 18, 19, 20, 29 and 30, Town 2 north, Range 15 east, Clinton Township and Section 24, Hopewell Township, in latitude north 41° 7' and longitude west from Washington 6° 8'.
Notwithstanding the advantages of locality and accessibility, the cast bank of the river was not thought of as the site of a city for almost four years after the first settlers came in, and for two years after the first village was platted on the west bank of the Sandusky at this point.
Tiffin is, in fact, a church-going city, and in its public records is found the proof.

The former Tiffin Landfill is located in a bend in the Sandusky River north of County Road 90 (CR 90) between State Route 53 and County Road 61 and is approximately 4 miles south-southwest of the city of Tiffin (Figure 1).
Consultants for the City of Tiffin have theorized that groundwater contamination is the result of groundwater coming into contact with elevated levels of VOCs in the landfill gas.
Ohio EPA is currently reviewing a proposed plan of work submitted by the City of Tiffin that would address surface improvements at the landfill and also address the elevated levels of landfill gas detected both at the perimeter of the landfill and in off-site groundwater piezometers.

This settlement, Oakley Village, was later renamed Fort Ball in 1820 Josiah Hedges bought a piece of land on the south side of the river and another settlement, Tiffin, was founded in 1822 a court house was established in Tiffin.
When Tiffin and Fort Ball merged to form Tiffin in 1850, three prominent businessmen, Warren P. Noble, Samuel B. Sneath and J. Shaufelberger purchased areas of the land north of the river.
The scenic river program in Ohio is administered by the Department of Natural Resources, the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.

Most people know this river an excellent fishing river and hundreds can be found wading this river in Fremont, OH below the Baldville Dam during the spring walleye spawn.
Most northwest Ohio rivers are mostly muddy and low gradient, but below Tinkers Dam, the Sandusky picks up steam and is a characterized by rocky shelves that create fun lines to pick your way down stream.
The river continues to wind and flow though pretty much uninhabited land and farmland until about mile 11 of the 15-mile trip.
