Tiger has a discount fare that amounts to about US$202 all in; the best that I could find on Australian was about US$298 all in.
Tiger's excess baggage fee was fairly reasonable and would work out to about US$30-40 for me each way; Australian's excess baggage fee was much higher and would work out to nearly US$100 each way.

The fares when booking flights at tiger airways does not include taxes and you will only see taxes if you will continue after you filled up your name, so i dont think they are clever in hiding the charges, you are not clever in booking online.
Tiger Airways offers promotion on a regular basis, but if your preferred date of travel is not included in their promo/discounted rates, then you will have to pay the full amount.
