Tiger Cup was started in 1996 as Roehl Sybing written, the same year AFF (ASEAN Football Federation) was formed.
Before the Tiger Cup the SEA Games was the unoffical ASEAN Champion but there were problems with the SEA Games arrangement as whenever it was Philippines turn to host it they were 'unwilling' to include football in the Games.
