In fact, close attention to "Tigermilk" brings out more details of Murdoch's master plan: the way he develops characters by accruing incidental details, his narrator's appearances and disappearances, his low-key jokes ("So I gave myself to God/There was a pregnant pause before He said OK"), his intertextual games.
If all "Tigermilk" had going for it was its words, it'd still be pretty solid -- on the level of a good Ron Sexsmith or Vic Chesnutt album.
Belle and Sebastian's lithe, light-fingered arrangements, augmented with strings and a bit of trumpet, and especially Murdoch's tender but careful enunciation, recall Nick Drake and Donovan, and there's a bit of the Smiths in their artful guitar gymnastics and renunciation of direct force.

 Belle and Sebastian's 'Tigermilk'
Tigermilk is Belle and Sebastian's first album, which was originally released in 1996 with an all-vinyl run of only 1000 on 'Electric Honey Records' - the label on which students taking part in the Stow College Music Business Course release a record every year, usually a single.
Eventually, Jeepster (to whom the band signed immediately after Tigermilk was first released) agreed to put out a new edition of the album with different cover art, and in 1999 - after The Boy with the Arab Strap but before Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant - the re-release came out.
Tigermilk has much more in common with If You're Feeling Sinister than any of their later albums; Stuart Murdoch sings lead on all of the tracks, the instrumentation is relatively bare, and many of the songs seem to be written from the point of view of a geeky schoolboy.

Tigermilk was recorded four years ago and has finally been re-released on CD by Matador Records.
If there's anything to be said about this band's progression, it's that maybe with the release of this first album, coming as it has on the heels of the critically acclaimed "Boy with the Arab Strap" and "If You're Feeling Sinister" the band can roll into a kind of regression.
Belle and Sebastian play their best tunes off the cuff -- the worst thing that could happen to these guys is to get them in a studio with some perfectionist producer fiddling with the sound 'til it loses its original intent.

Tigermilk is simply gorgeous, an unaffected debut equal to the Smiths' finest work, and seemed to arrive fully formed out of nowhere in May 1996.
Although "Tigermilk" was the bands debut - recorded with both limited time and resources at their disposal - it still shows the belles at their absolute best.
"Tigermilk" fuses the sound of The Smiths at the height of their creative power with the ideals of the indie/lofi-movement of the 90s, creating - in all its simplicity - pop-music both more advanced and yet simpler and more truthful than anything done before it.

Tigermilk, in its second release, has reached an amazing number 13 in the official UK album charts, a noteworthy accomplishment from a small Scottish band.
Viewing Tigermilk in comparison to the band’s other releases If You’re Feeling Sinister (originally released in November, 1996) and The Boy With The Arab Strap (originally released in September, 1998) provides fascinating insight into the band’s style.
Long-time fans of Belle and Sebastian have probably already bought Tigermilk to replace their worn-out copy; but for newer fans, yes, this album is nearly as good as their other two and will increase your admiration for the band.

Together they recorded some demos which were picked up by Stow College's Music Business course which, every year, produces and releases a single on the college's label, Electric Honey.
As the band had a number of songs already and the label were extremely impressed with the demos, Belle and Sebastian (named after Belle et Sébastien, a children's book by French writer Cécile Aubry) were allowed to record a full-length album Tigermilk.
Tigermilk was also given a full release by Jeepster before the band started work on their next LP.

It's remarkable, therefore, that Tigermilk is Belle and Sebastian's finest by some length; a gorgeous album poised somewhere in between the shambling Scottish charm of The Pastels and the delicate pathos of Nick Drake.
The heart of Tigermilk is in frontman Stuart Murdoch's choral whisper; impossibly fragile elegies are spurred to greatness by the band's energetic Northern Soul rhythms and sprightly folk.
Tigermilk, though, is replete with a muscular tension on tracks like "Expectations" and "I Don't Love Anyone" that downplays Belle and Sebastian's sometimes annoying tendency to drift into syrupy twee-ness.

Do Something Pretty, Sojourners Magazine/September-October 1999
Since recording Tigermilk, Belle and Sebastian has solidified its eight-person line-up and released two additional albums (If You’re Feeling Sinister and The Boy With the Arab Strap) and four EPs (the latter are only available as imports in the United States).
Stuart Murdoch is the main songwriter, although Stevie Jackson, Isobel Campbell, and Stuart David contributed songs to the last album and some of the singles, and several of the band members have separate recording projects of their own or play in other groups.
The tunes on Tigermilk are deeply informed by musical forebears that range from the Velvet Underground to ‘60s soul artists, with a touch of art rock, folk, and Donovan.

To be frightfully honest, as honesty often is, part of charm of Belle and Sebastian's first album Tigermilk had been the impracticality of it all.
Each listen to a cassette dub of the album was a mildly dangerous proposition--the tape could snap, and each listen brought the tape closer to an end.

The word-of-mouth success of Tigermilk thankfully led to the group's continuing efforts of translating Murdoch's songs and ideas into actual music.
The 10 songs here have such a natural pop sensibility, such a grace and resonance, it's hard now to believe that Tigermilk was only originally intended as a small-time project between seven Glaswegian friends (the original vinyl release was limited to 1,000 copies).

Both factions could probably use a chocolate malted and a kind word now and then, but the odds are better that this reissue of the band's wicked-rare 1995 debut, Tigermilk, will be the only nice thing to happen to any Belle and Sebastian fan all summer.
Tigermilk offers a rough sketch of the band's virtues: acoustic guitars, zippy melodies, strings, horns and the sullen schoolboy wit of Stuart Murdoch, who torments his nanny with a breathy voice that evokes Al Stewart of "Year of the Cat" fame after a proper clawing from Morrissey.
Tigermilk will never be anyone's favorite, but it's prime Belle and Sebastian -- the beautiful music of shut-in roues stung by the pangs of youth and taking it out on us.
