Tigray is the northern-most of the nine ethnic divisions ( kililoch) of Ethiopia.
As one of the Abyssinian provinces of the Imperial era, Tigray was ruled by a native Ras or Negus.
The region borders Eritrea to the north (on the Red Sea coast, and since 1993, independent from Ethiopia), Sudan to the west, the Ethiopian region of Afar to the east and the Ethopian region of Amhara to the south.

Time constraints for the Tigray mission and an almost complete absence of roads into the interior of Afar region caused some limitations but overall both missions felt that they were able to get a good "feel" for the plight of the various displaced populations.
In Tigray, this is the same system that the Region follows in implementing relief activities due to crop failures, a system that has been in place and functioning for many years.
Not only did the displaced people in Tigray and Afar leave their homes with very few personal possessions but in Tigray they have also lost their means of livelihood.

Casualties continue to be reported in the Tigray region in 2003, with three persons killed and thirteen injured in mine and UXO incidents as of the end of May.
In Tigray region, 62 new mine/UXO casualties were reported, of which 12 were killed and 50 injured: 59 males and three females, 25 were under 18 years of age.
In 2002, 67 new landmine/UXO casualties were reported by RaDO in Tigray and in Afar; 13 were killed and 54 injured.

These are well exposed in Shewa Province in the Abay (Upper Blue Nile) River Basin and in Tigray Province in the area around Mekele (Getaneh, 1991; Kazmin, 1973, 1975).
Southeastern Plateau: Sediments of possible Late Permian through Late Jurassic age are present in Harerge Province in the region of Harer approximately 400 km east of Addis Ababa.
The geology of the region around the base of Mount Hakim near Harer was studied by Mühlen (1931) who reported finding fossil fish teeth and bones identified as Lepidotus suggesting a Triassic or Early Jurassic age of the Lower Sandstone Unit.

Almost ironically, Tigray has a large water table and in many cases, wells do not have to be exceptionally deep to reach it.
Founded just a few years before the start of the famine, the Relief Society of Tigray was at the forefront of the effort to save victims of the tragedy.
Approximately one million people died during the famine including hundreds of thousands from Tigray which was one of the hardest hit areas.

 Circus Tigray: Performances
For the competition organized by Ethiopian Football Super League in Mekele, Circus Tigray held an overnight entertainment of music show at the Trans Ethiopia Hall, to an audience of 500 spectators composed of the community, friends of sports from the various towns of Tigray region.

Most of it is in Amharic and only English text on it reads: "Tigray National Regional Administration." The amazing thing is that the symbol at the top is almost the same as the symbol on the communist flag of 1987-1991.
So why is it that the Tigray administration is using a modified communist symbol, espically considering that Tigray was the region most opposed to the communist regime?
What this means is that the old province of Tigray grew with territory formerly belonging to the province of Gonder to give birth to this state (eventually with border arrangements with other administrative divisions).
