 Amazon.ca: Tik-Tok of Oz: Books
But the uncomplicated Tik - Tok was particularly useful in a lazily composed narrative, since, as a preprogrammed machine of limited potential in need of continuous winding, Baum could silence him at any time by simply having him run down, no dramatic action or mental fatigue required.
Apparently unwilling to create new material, Baum drafted a play that he called Tik - Tok Of Oz, which was simply a retelling of his third Oz novel, 1907's Ozma Of Oz, with some character names changed and minor plot elements rearranged.
Oz newcomers beware: Tik - Tok Of Oz reads much like the uninspired retread it is; like the clockwork man himself, the book is sorely in need of additional winding under its left arm.

The Tik Tok DVD Shops were created by Hettie Herzog, president and owner of Automated Distribution Technologies--the same company that manufactured Shop 2000.
But putting the Tik Tok DVD Shops in suburban locations may prove to be a more successful strategy for McDonald's, said Timothy Henderson, editor of the National Retail Federation's Stores magazine.
McDonald's has been testing the Tik Tok shops in the Washington, DC, area since last spring, but when asked, store employees have previously denied the company's involvement with the shops.

Oz is less enjoyable now that I am an adult and the debate Maguire raises in Wicked is more compelling, in some ways, than the black-and-white morally clear world Baum painted for my childhood.

Stop Evolution in Its Tracks! by John Sladek
Tik-Tok (1983), for instance, is a novel about a robot who becomes a murderer after damage to his " Asimov circuits." Sladek's stories are often absurd and surreal, but in spite of their tone, style and affect, much of his fiction is in dialogue with genre sf, often hard sf.
He is a serious and innovative writer whose allegiance to genre conventions is nearly nonexistent, but he is a rationalist and moral satirist who despises cant and humbug, often presenting them in a darkly humorous light.
John Sladek began writing in the sf genre at the height of the New Wave.

BAUM, L. The play The Tik-Tok Man of Oz (produced 1913) was a version of Ozma of Oz ( 1907); the novel Tik-Tok of Oz * ( 1914), based on the play, is thus closely related to the earlier novel.
The two novels definitely by him are Modern Writing, or The Elegant Enthusiast; and The Interesting Emotions of Arabella Bloomville: A Rhapsodical Romance ( 1796) as by Lady Harriet Marlow, and Azemia: A Description and Sentimental Novel ( 1797 2 vols) as by Agneta Mariana Jenks.

Knye's favourite novels are Udolpho and The Castle of Otranto.
The solo novels Black Aura (1974) and Invisible Green (1977) are skilful recreations of the no-longer fashionable `locked-room' detective story; an earlier short story in this vein, `By an Unknown Hand', won the 1972 Times detective story competition.
In a conventional novel, the question can only be tackled by having a mad character or a philosopher, or a mad philosopher, in the story.

Tik-Tok (novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Roderick, mocks the notion of the Three Laws of Robotics and suggests that there is no way such complex moral principles could be hard-wired into any intelligent being; Tik-Tok decides that the "asimov circuits" are in fact a collective delusion, or a form of religion, which robots have been tricked into believing.
After manipulating both robots and humans to cause chaos and bloodshed, Tik-Tok becomes wealthy (partly through a brutal program of health care
The novel gleefully satirizes Asimov's relatively benign view of how robots would serve humanity, suggesting that the reality would be exactly akin to slavery : robots are worked until they drop and are made the victims of humans' worst appetites, including rape.

The result is that Tik-Tok kills sadistically over the course of the book, all while building himself a corporate empire and manipulating social and political opinion so that robots are allowed to own property and vote.
This is all fairly predictable from the beginning, but what I did find unexpectedly interesting are the parallels with Bret Easton Ellis' highly controversial novel American Psycho, which was written eight years later.
In both, an outwardly impeccable character engages in nasty sadism, even tells other people what's he's done, only to have them think it's a joke.

The SF Site Featured Review: Tik-Tok
I've been making up for that omission to some extent: since his passing I've read his fine first novel, The Reproductive System (known as Mechasm in the US), which is also available in a Gollancz SF Collector's Edition, and his quirky mystery Black Aura.
What I found in Sladek was a very funny writer, and a severely satirical writer, who was perhaps not terribly interested in consistent or coherent plots.
Besides SF, John Sladek explored other genres such as in his collaboration with Thomas M Disch on the thriller Black Alice (1968), a spoof Gothic novel written as Cassandra Knye, and a pair of "Golden Age" detective crime novels, Black Aura (1974) and Invisible Green (1977).
