Tilbury has a deep water port, a fort and was the site of an important ferry to Gravesend on the south bank of the river.
Forts at Tilbury were an important defence of London, particularly during the Spanish Armada and the Anglo-Dutch Wars.
The first permanent fort at Tilbury was a D-shaped blockhouse built in 1539 by Henry VIII and designed to cross-fire for palisading and a boom of ships' masts, chains and cables was stretched across the Thames to Gravesend anchored to lighters.

Correction: The fort was built on low lying land in a curve of the river Thames at East Tilbury and was positioned there to form a "triangle of fire" between Coalhouse Fort on the Essex bank of the river and Cliffe Fort and Shornmead Fort on the Kent bank.
Coalhouse Fort itself is partly surrounded by a water filled "wet ditch" (not moat) and a dry ditch as part of the defences from the Victorian period.
Due south from the fort and close to the river is the remains of a quick firing battery, constructed in the early part of the twentieth century and originally equipped with 12 pounder artillery pieces.

Tilbury Fort is a hugely impressive structure, and shows how the traditional British castle-fortress evolved to cope with the demands of modern warfare.
With another fort, on the opposite bank of the river at Gravesend, it was intended to provide the first line of defence for London.
Following a regular pentagon in shape, Tilbury Fort was planned with four massive diamond-shaped bastions at each corner, and a further centrally placed bastion in the southern wall facing the river (this southernmost bastion was, for whatever reason, never built).

Tilbury Fort was constructed in the late 17th century, and replaced a smaller blockhouse built during the reign of Henry VIII.
Artillery was now the dominant weapon and the fort was designed to withstand an artillery bombardment, built low lying with earth embankments fronted by brick.

Although modified somewhat over time, Tilbury Fort is a fine example of military architecture of the seventeenth century.
Built to impress visitors arriving from the river, especially foreign ones, the Water Gate is unusually decorative and is thought to have once included a statue of Charles II in its center.

 Tilbury Fort
A fort and coastal battery began in 1670 by order of Charles II and designed by his chief engineer, Sir Bernard de Gomme.
The monument includes the buried remains of an Henrician blockhouse, the far larger and more complex fort and battery which succeeded the blockhouse in the late 17th century, the late 19th and early 20th century alterations to the fort, and a World War II pillbox.
In the early stages of World War II the chapel housed the Operations Room which controlled the anti-aircraft defences of the Thames and Medway (North) Gun Zone, until it was relocated to a purpose built structure at Vange in 1940.

For those that know Essex just enough, Tilbury doesn't sound like one of the most likely places to hold a military vehicle rally.
Now dwarfed by Tilbury Power Station to the east and the docks to the west, Tilbury Fort dates from 1539; English Heritage are now just getting round to looking at the roof.
The cast kept changing throughout the three days, but the EMLRA did get up to fourteen vehicles at one point and didn't drop to under ten until Monday lunchtime, making it the largest display EMLRA have staged at Tilbury, and possibly the largest display at the whole event.
