USS Tilefish (SS-307), a Balao-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the tilefish, a large, yellow-spotted deepwater food fish.
Tilefish returned to Pearl Harbor on 11 July and was soon underway for Midway Island and Saipan.
Tilefish was decommissioned on 12 October 1959, underwent overhaul at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard, and was recommissioned on 30 January 1960.

Tilefish (SS-307) was laid down on 10 March 1943 at Vallejo, Calif., by the Mare Island Navy Yard; launched on 25 October 1943, sponsored by Mrs.
Finding contact with the enemy to be very light, Tilefish requested another patrol area and was assigned to the northern Marianas where she searched for targets on 19 and 20 May. She completed this patrol at Majuro on 29 May 1944.
Tilefish ended her third patrol at Midway on 24 October 1944.

 Status of Fisheries Resources off Northeastern United States -Tilefish
Tilefish, Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps, inhabit the outer continental shelf from Nova Scotia to South America, and are relatively abundant in the Southern New England to Mid-Atlantic area at depths of 80 to 440 m (44 to 240 fathoms).
Tilefish are relatively slow growing and long-lived, with a maximum observed age and length of 35 years and 110 cm (43.3 in.) for females and 26 years and 112 cm (44.1 in.) for males.
Landings and CPUE data indicate that tilefish were overexploited during the height of the longline fishery (between 1977 and 1982).

The tilefish occurs mainly on the upper part of the Continental Slope from New England to southern Florida.
The young sand tilefish is quite distinct from the adult; it is spiny all over the head, whereas the adult has one opercular spine.
In contrast to its larger deeper-dwelling relatives, the sand tilefish is a slim, almost eel-like fish averaging one foot in length, and is restricted to sandy areas and grass beds rarely deeper than 50 feet.

Tilefish caught in the Atlantic Ocean are safe to eat, according to the federal Food and Drug Administration's latest mercury-in-seafood advisory, which appeared on the agency's Web site on March 19.
The tilefish association argued that the species was not migratory, and that the golden tilefish its boats harvested - a species separate from those found in the Gulf of Mexico - were caught 100 miles at sea in from 80 to 130 fathoms (480 to 780 feet) of unpolluted water.
Nonetheless, the warnings about mercury in tilefish were not stricken from the agency's guidelines and appeared in the F.D.A.'s March warnings despite the efforts of the tilefish association and the intervention of the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council.
