Tilehurst is a suburb of Reading in Berkshire, bounded by the River Thames in the North, Sulham woods to the west and the A4 to the south.
Before Reading expanded westwards, Tilehurst or Tygelhurst used to be a separate village and locals still refer to the area at the top of the hill as 'the village'.
Tilehurst Water Tower - situated at the highest point of Tilehurst - can be seen from miles around and is regarded as the most recognisable 'symbol' of Tilehurst.

TILEHURST at the turn of the 21st century has been captured on camera in a new book created by photographers with learning and physical disabilities.
Yasmin Woad says it is a "walk through Tilehurst" because it details different streets and landmarks, starting at the Bear Inn, along Park Lane, School Road, down Norcot Road, up Kentwood Hill and ending at Victoria Recreation Ground.
Copies are available at Tilehurst Library, and the Kingsley Organisation Photography Group wants to present some to community groups and schools.

 The Thames Path - Tilehurst to Cholsey
Tilehurst is on the line from London Paddington and Reading to Didcot and Oxford and has trains every 30 minutes from Reading, Didcot and Oxford Mondays to Saturdays and hourly trains on a Sunday.
Tilehurst is one stop west of Reading and is only 5 mintues from the main station in Reading.
This was the reason for the temporary bridge I found at Tilehurst Station, since this bridge was closed when I walked this part of the path and so I had to return to Tilehurst Station and walk adjacent to the main road.

However after the Reformation, it was not until the latter half of the 20th century that Tilehurst was again able to boast a Catholic church of it's own.
When St James' was built in 1837-40 it was the first legal Catholic church to open in the area in 300 years since the Reformation, and it was another century before the parish was divided and the Church of the English Martyrs was built near to Prospect Park.
Kelleher arrived in the April to begin 33 years' devoted service to the people of Tilehurst, during which St Paul's School was built and opened in 1969, and on Christmas Day 1976 the first Mass was said in this magnificent church.

Parents with children in both the infant and junior parts of The School have the inconvenience of travelling to two sites within a short space of time each day and the separate playing field means that it is difficult for the school to provide the normal PE and sports programme of a primary school.
In order to provide improved facilities to the residents of Tilehurst, it is proposed to include these facilities, together with the nearby Blagrave Nursery and all of The School in one new complex and it is this plan that has been investigated over the course of the last two years.
Further detailed work has been undertaken to address the concerns raised and in light of this the Governors of The School have accepted that a smaller synthetic turf pitch, which still complies with Government regulations, would be sufficient for the school's purposes and provide a useful asset to the community.

 The Thames Path - Henley-on-Thames to Tilehurst
From Shiplake there is several miles of peaceful walking before arriving at the attractive village of Sonning where the Thames path switches banks on its way to the busy town of Reading, where the Thames joins the Kennet and Avon Canal.
If this diversion has since been removed, continue on the Thames path until it is then signed up a bridge to cross the railway line, emerging onto a main road, where you turn left and continue on this road until you reach the station.
Tilehurst is on the London Paddington and Reading to Oxford line.
