The monotypic genus Oceanopapaver is an endemic shrub found growing on serpentine soils in New Caledonia.
The chloroplast genes rbcL and ndhF were sequenced and phylogenetic analyses performed to clarify the taxonomic placement of this genus.
The results strongly support the inclusion of Oceanopapaver in a clade of former Tiliaceae, the Grewioideae (Malvaceae s.l.).

The Tiliaceae is known as the Linden, or Basswood family.
The one we see most frequently in our area is Tilia americana, and in my experience, the species is most common along riverbanks.The picture to the left is of a cultivar planted on the Bridgewater College Campus.
The native basswoods I have seen are along riverbanks.

Oceanopapaver is a monotypic genus which has been assigned variously to Tiliaceae, Capparaceae, Papaveraceae, Cistaceae, or a monogeneric Oceanopapaveraceae.
In the classification of Goldberg (1986) a narrowly drawn Malvales consists of Bombacaceae, Elaeocarpaceae, Malvaceae, Sterculiaceae and Tiliaceae.
The tribes Grewieae and Sparrmannieae (from Tiliaceae) and Hermannieae, Lasiopetaleae, Theobromeae and Byttnerieae (from Sterculiaceae) are nested together to the exclusion of the remainder of Tiliaceae and Sterculiaceae.
