Tilly sur Seulles became one of the most fought over parts of the Normandy battlefield, the ruins of the village changing hands several times in June 1944.
Panzer Lehr planned to make an attack around Tilly on 10th/11th June, but their HQ group was wiped out in a bombing raid on Thury-Harcourt, so they found themselves fighting a defensive battle instead.
Tilly was finally captured, and 50th Div set up their line to the west towards Lingèvres and Longraye - which hardly moved for the next month or so.

 The Strategic Setting
Initially, the 'desert rats' would have to advance in backwater country roads, but 5.5 miles south of Tilly was the N175 highway, which led straight to Caen, and the planned 1st Airborne drop zones.
While the 50th and 7th Armoured Division moved towards Tilly, the 51st Division advanced to aid the paras of the 6th Airborne Division.
In the same area was the 3rd Infantry Division, whose brigades, aided by the tanks of 27th Armoured Brigade, fought a desperate struggle to breach the defenses of the 716th and parts of the veteran 21st Panzer Division, to reach Caen They never would.

Contemporary Review: The Battlefields Of Normandy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Tilly is a fairly ordinary French village, smaller than its neighbour Villers-Bocage where the weekly market was in progress as I drove through down me de I'Armee Britannique Sharpshooters, a name that set the note for the day ahead.
Contrast this with the blow-ups of photos of Tilly taken pre-war which hang on the walls, and the pristine neatness and contented air of the place today, and it is difficult to believe they are one and the same, so complete was the destruction.
After Tilly the party went on, south west to Livry, and Briquessart, tiny places difficult to find on an ordinary touring map, the site, nevertheless, of the kind of typically hard fought infantry action that the nature of the landscape dictated.
