Riemenschneider belonged to the first generation of sculptors who occasionally abandoned the customary practice of decorating their works with pigments and metal foil, producing instead uncolored sculpture.
Riemenschneider’s favored material, limewood, or linden, is especially suitable for sculpture, since it has a homogeneous texture, making it easier to carve than oak and other woods with a pronounced ray structure.
Riemenschneider’s sandstone sculpture is distinguished by a subtle, sensual treatment of surfaces, especially of exposed flesh, that achieves astounding naturalistic effects.

Tilman Riemenschneider was one of the greatest sculptors of the late Middle Ages.
After Riemenschneider acquired the status of master sculptor in Würzburg in 1485, his workshop rapidly grew into one of the most prolific in Germany.
Riemenschneider served on the Würzburg municipal council and sided with the peasants in their unsuccessful revolt against the prince-bishop of the city, which abruptly ended his career in 1525.

Tilman Riemenschneider the Elder, the sculptor’s father, moves with his family to Osterode am Harz, where he becomes master of the mint.
Riemenschneider and his shop begin carving a cycle of sandstone figures of Christ, John the Baptist, and the apostles for the buttresses of the Marienkapelle in Würzburg, which are installed in late 1506.
A sculptor from Würzburg, presumably Riemenschneider, carves a crucifix for the castle chapel in Wittenberg, commissioned by Prince-Elector Friedrich the Wise (the sculpture is destroyed by fire in 1760).

 Biography
He held various offices in city government, and in 1525 he was tortured and briefly imprisoned because he was one of the councilmen who refused to support the use of force against the rebels in the Peasants' War.
Much of Riemenschneider's work is still in the churches for which it was carved, but he is also well represented in the Mainfrankisches Museum in Würzburg.
Two of his sons, Jörg and Hans, were sculptors, and two others, Bartholomeus (a pupil of Dürer) and Tilman, were painters.

Tilman Riemenschneider was born in Heiligenstadt, in the region of Thuringia, around 1460.
Riemenschneider's most important commissions were executed in towns spanning the area from Ulm to just north of Wurzburg.
But just as Riemenschneider's iconography is punctuated by certain new motifs and references--his Madonnas invariably stand on a crescent moon in an allusion to the woman described in Revelation (12:1), "clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet"--so the effects of the wood carving distinguish the style of these statues from their Gothic precedent.

Tilman Riemenschneider was a largely forgotten sculptor from northern Germany who, though highly influential in his own time, now has few works extant or even well remembered.
His contribution to this album seems to have been to provide the photographer with a chance to present his few surviving pieces of sculpture and to have given chronological and geographic bounds to the artists when selecting the musical works that would be performed.
Also of interest to the amateur musicologist is the comparative selection of Alma redemptoris mater, originally a plainchant as presented, and reconstructed by Ockeghem, making the piece his own through his innovative use of polyphony, creating beautiful sounds that must make angels cry.

This volume, based around Tilman Riemenschneider, is unusual because the artist in question was a sculptor and lime-wood woodcarver.
I have to say immediately that the art is mostly greater than the music represented which includes too many short instrumental arrangements of tunes popular at the time in the secular world.
The text is interspersed with coloured photographs of Riemenschneider’s work for example the beautiful ‘Sant Afra’ wood carving which is still visibly painted and gilded.
