Tilting train - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The train may be constructed such that inertial forces themselves cause the tilting, commonly referred to as passive tilt, or it may be actively induced by a computer-controlled mechanism, referred to as active tilt.
The first tilting trains were the TALGO trains of Spain, developed in the 1930s as a lightweight, fast train using passive tilt.
Modern tilting trains have the blessing of the latest signal processing technology which reads the line ahead and is able to anticipate a very precise control signal to the individual carriages and complaints about nausea have become a thing of the past.

High-speed rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The world speed record for a conventional wheeled train was set in 1990 by a French TGV (train à grande vitesse; literally "high speed train") that reached a speed of 515 km/h (320 mi/h), and an experimental Japanese magnetic levitation (maglev) train has reached 581 km/h (361 mph).
The earliest high-speed train deployed in Europe was the italian "Direttissima" that connected Rome with Florence (254 km,158 mi) in 1978.
The licitation is to be released in autumn 2005.

The Eurostar trains which run through the Eurotunnel between the United Kingdom and France and Belgium are modified versions of the TGV trains, which are capable of running on different power systems and also with seven different signalling modes.
These trains tilt, because of curves along the track, and the top speed is 150 mph (240 km/h).

Tilting the body of a rail passenger car during curve negotiation offers the possibility of increasing the speed of a trainset in a curve without exceeding the maximum allowed steady state lateral acceleration felt by the passengers.
Tilting of the car is accomplished by a servo-valve controlling the hydraulic mechanism, which in turn tilts the car.
Tilting on wrong side (inverse tilt): the tilting command S3 and the lateral acceleration S4' have the same polarity a or -a is chosen as limit value.

As early as the 1930s, automobile travel had begun to cut into the rail passenger market, somewhat reducing economies of scale, but it was the development of the Interstate Highway System and of commercial aviation in the 1950s and 1960s that dealt the most damaging blows to rail transportation, both passenger and freight.
There was little point in operating passenger trains to advertise freight service when those who made decisions about freight shipping traveled by car and by air, and when the railroads' chief competitors for that market were interstate trucking companies.
The only states which are not served by Amtrak trains are Alaska (served by the Alaska Railroad), Hawaii, South Dakota, and Wyoming (lost service in the 1997 cuts; served by Amtrak's Thruway Motorcoaches).

 Tilting Trains
Trains that tilt can go up to 25% to 40% faster around curves than conventional trains without upsetting the passengers, and as mentioned before this can significantly increase average speeds and cut journey times.
Clearly trains themselves need to tilt, then you get the double benefit of tilted track and tilting train, and the train can tilt to exactly suit the speed it is going at.
While the very high speed trains like the TGV could be regarded as the Rolls Royce of trains, tilting trains could be thought of as the cheep and cheerful mini metro.

The trains are called Pendolino, or "little pendulum," because they automatically tilt the passenger cars by means of hydraulic or electromechanical tilt actuators—depending on operational requirements—connected to the wheel assemblies, or bogies, when negotiating curves at any speed.
As a result, the train can negotiate curves at up to full speed, which is 35 to 45 percent faster than conventional trains without any effect on the quality of the ride.
When a Talgo pendular train enters a curve, the higher placement of its springs creates a compressive force on the interior plane of the springs, tilting the train car to the inside of the curve by as much as 3.5 degrees.

Railway Technology - X2000 Tilting Trains operated by Swedish State Railways (SJ), Sweden
Sweden's X2000 fleet of tilting trains has been a major catalyst for the renewed interest in this type of technology shown by the newly-privatised British train operators investing in the final years up to the millenium.
Each train also has three independent braking systems, an electric regenerative brake for speed adjustments down to standstill; air-operated disc brakes for normal and hard braking, and a magnetic track brake for use in emergencies.
The trains' tilting mechanism brings long-term benefits for the track in the form of reduced forces, cutting down on wear, which in turn allows speeds to be increased substantially on straight track, and by up to 50% through curves.
