Tim Burgess - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tim Burgess (born May 30, 1967) is the lead singer of British rock/indie act the Charlatans.
In 2004 he collaborated with The Chemical Brothers, singing on the track The Boxer from their album Push the Button, Burgess had previously appeared with The Chemical Brothers on the 1995 track Life Is Sweet taken from their debut album Exit Planet Dust.
As Tim Burgess has lived in Los Angeles for some years, far away from the other band members who still live in England, fans feared that The Charlatans may split following Burgess's solo album, but the band reformed to record Up at the Lake.

BBC Manchester - Music - Tim Burgess at the Academy 2
When Tim Burgess first set out his plans for a solo album, there were plenty of people ready to deride it before they heard it.
Burgess was obviously enjoying himself, grinning constantly and his nervous energy, so often something that holds back his Charlatans performances, melted away to reveal a warmth and consistency that few could have matched.
Burgess was a revelation that even the most devote of Charlatans fans could not have expected.

So this first ever solo live foray by their cheekily charismatic frontman Tim Burgess is a bold attempt on his part at rewriting the instruction manual, although whether we’d need to call in the professionals before the end was a very real possibility that the beerily baying crowd seemingly neglected to consider.
Fortunately, less than a song in, we realised that the game is most definitely not a bogey for Tiny Tim and his new five-piece band.
And the success of this show is something no-one could begrudge the affable Burgess, who still shuffles on stage with the boyish embarrassment of someone being paraded before his new girlfriend’s extended family.

 Edinburgh Festivals - Tim Burgess
Tim Burgess proves he has what it takes to go it alone.
"TIM BURGESS, you’re a f***ing god!" yells the man next to me. Burgess, it has to be said, looks more like a thirtysomething slacker with a hangover than a deity.
Burgess is clearly held in high regard, though, and there are few shouts for Charlatans numbers.

Burgess may not receive the critical accolades, British tabloid clippings, and chart hits of the bands who influenced him or he helped inspire; however, he has quietly built a solid career with an impressive body of work that transcended the Madchester, shoegazer, and Britpop movements which his group flirted with.
Burgess was born on May 30, 1967 in Salford, Manchester, England.
Burgess was selected after an array of singers had already been auditioned.

 Scriptorium - Anthony Burgess
Burgess did not approve of the inclusion of a glossary in one edition, since he wanted his book on brainwashing to have an apposite, programmative effect on his reader, who would have to "learn" nadsat as he/she went along.
Burgess enjoys speculative biographies, mischievously turning and loosening the bolts which hold together the established forms of figures such as Keats (Abba Abba (1977)), Shakespeare (Nothing Like the Sun (1964)), and Sigmund Freud (The End of the World News (1982)).
Tim Conley has written a review of Anthony Burgess: A Life, the hatchet job penned by Roger Lewis.

Tim Burgess has been living in Los Angeles since 1998, and one listen to his solo debut makes it clear he's a long way--mentally and physically--from Manchester.
Known as the Jagger-lipped front man for Charlatans UK, Burgess includes only one tune that sounds anything like them, the sly and appealing ode to the West Coast "I Believe in the Spirit." From there it's a sunny swirl of surprisingly overt pop, with songs made to pump out of a beach-bound convertible.
Tim ends the original album with "All I Ever Do." He's always great with break-up songs and this rocks with the best of them.

Morrissey-solo | Morrissey "a fool" according to Tim Burgess (The Charlatans)
Tim Burgess is probably stupid enough to confuse the names, must be the drugs speaking.
I think the problem with Tim Burgess is that The Charlatans have always been perceived by the UK press as also-rans, riding in the wake of madchester, baggy and britpop.
This does not mean, though, that Tim Burgess has no right to criticise the Smiths, just as Morrissey was well within his rights to poke fun at many groups, including the Beatles, which achieved far more (artistically) than Morrissey so far has.

Tim Burgess - Only A Boy
As lead singer of one of the most enduring and under-rated bands of the last decade, you'd forgive Tim Burgess' solo ventures for sounding like a Charlatans out-take.
This is a lovely, uplifting single that skates along in a similar manner to Badly Drawn Boy's Disillusion, with a clipped guitar sound and brass section giving the song a nicely sunny feel for these dark winter months.
Burgess' falsetto, which was so successful on the Wonderland album, does become a bit irritating here, but overall this stands head and shoulders with the best of The Charlatans' output.

Tim Burgess of the Charlatans UK has been spending a lot of time in Hollywood lately, and as a result you can hear an American rootsiness in this Britpop artist's recent solo work.
Tim Burgess began writing the songs that would end up on "I Believe" almost four years ago, while The Charlatans UK were on the road.
Perhaps, in Burgess’ falsetto and his desire to tap into the musical spirit of the Jamaican/Caribbean vibe, he heard echoes of the Stones’, Black And Blue and Goat’s Head Soup, or maybe he just heard a great rock’n’soul record.

Whether you are a fan of the Charlatans UK or not, after listening to I Believe you will be bestowed with the knowledge that front man Tim Burgess is a much happier human being than you are.
It has Burgess using the sprightly falsetto he discovered recently with the Charlatans, while getting on about the innocence of youth and love.
But the rest… well, you can hear Burgess battling hard with his '60s and '70s American influences, hell-bent on giving them a fresh new spin, and adhering to his newfound romantic outlook.

But it was their driving organ sound and Tim Burgess's aloof, lazy vocals, (captured perfectly on the 1990 hit 'The Only One I Know') that powered their early successes.
By 2001s 'Wonderland' album Tim Burgess had begun to display an affection for Bob Dylan and Curtis Mayfield in his evolving singing style, something which has clearly led to the crafting of his debut solo album in adopted hometown, Los Angeles.
New Charlatans material is expected next year and meanwhile their frontman has taken to the road playing songs from the fantastic, 'I Believe', with his band of top LA session musicians.

Tim Burgess is very happy with his lot and he wants everybody to know it.
The title track is jaunty and totally happy and a cross between pop, reggae and ska.
It’s OK until Burgess starts singing, then it goes downhill fast because he’s adopted this intensely irritating, high pitched voice that detracts from what is actually quite a decent tune.
