Tim Foster, who won Olympic gold with the coxless four in Sydney last year, followed his crew-mate Steve Redgrave into retirement from international competition yesterday.
One of Foster's earliest successes was with Pinsent, in a coxless pair in the 1988 world junior championships which made him the first Briton to win gold in those championships in successive years.
Foster first had major back surgery in 1993 but came back to win bronze in the coxless four in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
