Tim Hagans’ Animation Imagination was one of my favorite releases of 1999.
In it, Hagans and saxophonist / producer Bob Belden seemed to have hit on a way to incorporate turntables, samplers, and other such devices into an actual, honest-to-god jazz context, without watering down or otherwise compromising the music (i.e., by turning it into smooth jazz).
Hagans and Belden (now co-credited on the CD spine) wisely retained the core band from Animation Imagination and included DJ Kingsize, one of the more interesting of the half-dozen or so turntable / sample guys on that release, for the live show.

Hagans and Copland have crossed paths before, most notably on Copland’s Softly (Savoy, 1997)—also featuring Stewart—and on their duet disc Between the Lines (Steeplechase, 2001), which put their clear chemistry front and center.
Hagans’ “Space Dozen” is also based on an elliptical bass line and more obscure harmonies, but Gress and Stewart give it a little more swing.
Both Hagan’s title track and “Emazing” are closer to the center, and offer gentle Latin references, but in the hands of Copland, Gress, and Stewart the allusion is less obvious and more suggestive, with Hagans’ solos economical and lyrical.

Which isn't to say it hasn't been done before: Though a step for Hagans, whose previous albums have all been solid but mainly standard jazz outings, "Animation/Imagination" is indebted to the 1970s electric work of Miles Davis.
The Miles connection isn't accidental: Belden is actively involved in reissuing Davis' albums of that period for Columbia, and Hagans himself is candid about his reverence for electric Miles in the liner notes.

Tim Hagans | Animation * Imagination
Hagan's bold step into clubland, like Nils Petter Molvar's Khmer (ECM - 1998), is a substantially more original and noteworthy jazz innovation (forget all the wasted, awful attempts to marry jazz with hip hop).
The creative effort, only merely enhanced by Hagan's tremendous facility as a trumpeter (especially notable when he's not muted, as on “Trumpet Sandwich”), is invested in the perplexing and often deep-groove soundscapes he and Belden conjure.
But Hagan's finest moments are also the disc's least representative and most melodic: the lovely, ethereal “French Girl” and the ironic, inspired funk of the spontaneous “What They Don't Tell You About Jazz”; (spotting Kevin Hays's masterful Rhodes machinations).
