Zap2it - TV news - Minear Feels 'Inside' Must Die to Live Again
When that didn't work out, Minear and pal Howard Gordon ("24"), who'd previously teamed on the short-lived 1999 ABC science-fiction series "Strange World," reworked the idea, turning Nichols' character into a former childhood kidnap victim who parlays her unique insight into investigating serial murder and other heinous crimes.
This is not new territory for Minear, who was executive producer (with creator Joss Whedon) of "Firefly," and executive producer (with creator Bryan Fuller) of "Wonderfalls," both of which were axed by FOX only to find new life as 13-episode DVD sets.
Minear has a couple of ideas he's pitching for fall, one in the fantasy genre and one not.

Tim Minear is a clever, clever man. Part of me is just convinced that he out-Joss-es Joss Whedon.
He's the reason Out of Gas is the high water mark of Firefly, and why I've just watched the second episode (actually 11th) of Wonderfalls again with a certain kind of wry, loving relish.

When Tim became the showrunner for the series, phenomenal was upgraded to extraordinary in my book and I tuned into the first airing with a giddiness equivalent to that of a DOCTOR WHO fan who gets cast as the Doctor (that Tennant’s a lucky bastard).
Tim had mentioned his hope of putting THE INSIDE out in tandem with another short-lived Fox series, STRANGE WORLD (on which Tim had worked with INSIDE co-creator and 24 veteran Howard Gordon).
So, yes the show is essentially Fox’s stab at the CSI style procedural, but Tim Minear made a critical bait and switch that leaves the stories centering on the ongoing characters and their demons rather than focusing on the crime of the week.

Minear views this storytelling approach as being akin to the one taken by writer-director Quentin Tarantino in Pulp Fiction.

Minear explains that an episode of Angel is basically back-engineered, with the writers and producers deciding where they want the characters to go (both in an episode and over the course of a season) and then figuring out how they get there.
The scenes of Wesley (Alexis Denisof) chasing Fred (Amy Acker) through the hotel with an axe are positively chilling, and well-foreshadow the events of Wesley's journey from gentle and intellectual ex-Watcher into estrangement from his friends and a descent into darkness.

Between minding a vampire with a soul and a penchant for chains on one hand, and a rag-tag band of interstellar brigands on the other, Tim Minear must be the busiest man in television.
Exhaustion aside, however, Minear is brimming with enthusiasm with both shows, particularly Firefly, which he gets to have a hand in building from the ground up.
Minear doesn't dwell too much on the fantastic nature of the shows he works on, concentrating more on the humanity of a group of space brigands than the futuristic technology.

His first television spec, an episode of "The X-Files," landed him his first prime time television gig on "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." Chris Carter was impressed enough with the sample to hire him onto the "The X-Files" writing staff in year five of that show.
The following year, Tim made the move to Joss Whedon’s Mutant Enemy as a producer on the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spin-off "Angel." Tim became executive producer on "Angel," writing all the really good episodes and directing a bunch, too.
When Whedon launched his series "Firefly" for FOX, he asked Tim to share executive producing duties while still putting in time on "Angel." Since Tim was on an overall deal at the time, he actually made less with this promotion.

Minear listens carefully to every pitch, explaining why some ideas work, and why some will never make it to the board.
He steers the group through a process that many professional writers find difficult: creating a story from scratch that services the characters, stays true to a theme, and how to survive getting an idea shot down in a room full of your peers with your ego in tact.
Minear keeps the audience laughing with war stories from his own experiences in writers’ rooms, and follows the exercise with a QandA session in which he explains how he wrote the spec that landed him a job on The X-Files along with his suggestions for writing a very dark I Love Lucy spec.
