  Freddie Mercury: biography
A fellow student at Ealing College was bass player Tim Staffell, with whom Freddie became good friends.
As Tim's and Freddie's friendship became closer, Tim took him along to rehearsals of his band called Smile, with Brian May on the guitar and Roger Taylor on the drums.
In April 1970 Tim Staffell decided to leave Smile, and Freddie join them as lead singer.

In fact, Tim Staffell's vocal is very similar to Freddie's, except of course for the high notes.
Though Tim Staffell credits this as a Roger Taylor composition, it almost certainly had some input from Brian May. The lyrics are minimal, and apart from giving Brian an excuse to showcase a primitive version of the "Brighton Rock" solo, the song is pretty inconsequential.
Tim's voice has held up quite well, and this version would be strongly recomended even if it wasn't so interesting from a historic view.

Staffell designed a logo for the group which was a pair of large grinning red lips with glimmering white teeth and the band started gigging at Imperial College in October 1968.
However, Staffell was beginning to lose interest in the group and became more attracted to American music.
Staffell left Smile in early 1970 and was replaced as vocalist by the flamboyant Freddie Mercury, who had been hanging around with the group for a couple years while also working in his own bands.

Tim co-wrote Doing All Right so they could legitimately place that in the set, especially if they played it as Smile when the song was in its early stages.
