 MTV.com - Lionel Richie
Titled simply Lionel Richie, the album was released in late 1982 and was an immediate smash, reaching number three on the pop charts on its way to sales of over four million copies.
The song was slated to be the title track on Richie's upcoming album, but delays in the recording process prevented the record from being released until August 1986, by which time the title was changed to Dancing on the Ceiling (in order to promote Richie's next single release).
Richie's next album, Renaissance, was released to a favorable reception in Europe in late 2000; it was issued in the U.S. in early 2001.

 The Commodores/Lionel Richie
Where Richie used to create memorable ballads so effortlessly, now the best he can come up with is the faux anthem "Road To Heaven" (produced by Lenny Kravitz, as was the trite power ballad "Time Of Our Life").
Richie's first solo album went high up the charts, propelled by three Top Five ballads: "My Love," the sparely-arranged "Truly," and the irresistable if corny "You Are" (written with then-wife Brenda Harvey-Richie).
Richie recruited a bunch of big names for this comeback attempt: producers include Babyface and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and everyone from Robert Palmer to Peter Gabriel guests.

 Lionel Ritchie
Those took full flight with 1982's Lionel Richie, a quadruple platinum affair that was followed by two more multi-million sellers, 1983's Can't Slow Down--which won a Grammy for Album of the Year--and 1986's Dancing on the Ceiling.
Richie began stepping outside the Commodores in 1980, after Kenny Rogers' hit version of "Lady" led to him producing the singer's 1981 album "Share Your Love." "Endless Love," his 1981 chart-topping duet with Diana Ross (covered in 1994 by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey), was Motown's most successful single and further fueled Richie's solo ambitions.
He subsequently took more time between projects for "growth" and "introspection," which led to the creative ventures heard on 1992's Back to Front, 1996's Louder Than Words, 1998's Time, 2001's Renaissance, 2003's Encore (International release) and 2003's aptly titled The Definitive Collection.

IN THE POCKET was Lionel Richie's last album with the Commodores.
1981's In The Pocket was the last album that Lionel Richie recorded with The Commodores.
This album is miles away from previous offerings like CAUGHT IN THE ACT, MOVIN' ON, HOT ON THE TRACKS and the group's self-titled LP that contained smoldering funk and deep, infectious grooves, so don't expect to find much of that here.

Lionel Richie was proving himself too well in the Commodores, and when he hit it big with his duet with Diana Ross, he and Motown knew that it was time to move on.
In 1981, Lionel Richie had just left the Commodores, and would go on to be a huge solo artist for most of the decade.
Richie took but what he needed from the group's signature sound: two lush, dramatic ballads, "Truly" and "You Mean More To Me," slick, drum-programmed RandB like "Tell Me" (background vocals by tennis star Jimmy Connors) and the pretty "You Are," a touch of country-soul with "My Love," Rogers on background vocals.

Written by the great Lionel Richie, Missing You was a moving and powerful tribute to the late legend who Ross had recorded a succesful and now classic album of love duets with in 1973 (see separate review for the Diana And Marvin album).
That changed in 1984 when Ross returned with what was at the time her best album yet for RCA Records.
Bernard Edwards, one half of the famous 70's disco group Chic, and who had co-produced the riotously funky masterpiece diana (1980) album (a landmark in Ross' career) wrote Telephone for the Swept Away project which was belatedly released as an American single in 1985 (though got nowhere!).

Quincy Jones - Free Music Downloads, Videos, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
Jones was also on hand for Thriller's follow-up, 1987's Bad, the celebrated USA for Africa session which produced the benefit single "We Are the World" (written by Jackson and Lionel Richie), and he produced a rare album in which Jackson narrated the story of the film E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.
Jones' work for Barclay impressed the management at Mercury Records, a American label affiliated with the French imprint, and in 1961, he was named a vice president for Mercury, the first time an African-American had been hired as an upper-level executive by a major U.S. recording company.
While Jones maintained a busy schedule as a composer, producer, and arranger through the 1960s, he also re-emerged as a recording artist in 1969 with the album Walking in Space, which found Jones recasting his big-band influences within the framework of the budding fusion movement and the influences of contemporary rock, pop, and R&B sounds.

 Diana Ross
After one last #1 single for the label in 1981 (the title track to the film Endless Love, recorded as a duet with Lionel Richie) Ross temporarily ended her long-standing association with Motown, spending the bulk of the 1980's recording for RCA.
By this time, Ross had fully assumed the role of The Supremes' lead singer-- a situation that was clearly established by the replacement of Florence Ballard (who sang lead on some of the earlier recordings) with Cindy Birdsong and an alteration of the group's name to Diana Ross and The Supremes in 1967.
Both Ross' performance in the film and the accompanying soundtrack release were extremely well-received -- the former earning her an Oscar nomination and the latter becoming her only full-length album to reach the #1 position.
