		The International Time Capsule Society (ITCS) is an organization established in 1990 to promote the careful study of time capsules.
		The inaugural meeting of ITCS was held at Oglethorpe University in the spring of 1990, on the 50th anniversary of the sealing of the Crypt of Civilization.

		Time capsules are sometimes created and buried with much hoopla during celebrations such as a World Fair, cornerstone laying for a building or other event.
		The phrase "time capsule" has been in use since about 1937, but the idea is as old as the earliest human civilizations in Mesopotamia.
		If time capsules have a museum-like goal of preserving the culture of a particular time and place for study, they fulfill this goal very poorly in that they, by definition, are kept sealed for a particular length of time.

		The Westinghouse Time Capsule was put together as one of the major exhibits of the 1939 New York World's Fair, but it is interesting that something that was conceived as part of a giant trade and amusement fair should have been designed and constructed with such seriousness.
