Afterward to Time Out of Joint
And it was Time Out of Joint that was the firstborn of this new mutant breed, the unformed progenitor of the novels to follow, the missing link of the PKD literary ascendancy (the Van Vogt resonances here are not accidental).
Time Out of Joint was his first really mature handling of this conflicting realities theme, something that would turn up frequently--refined, reworked, redeveloped--in his later work (literalized as The Penultimate Truth and A Maze of Death, complexified in The Three Stigmata of Palmer Edritch, UBIK, and "Faith of Our Fathers").
In the Time Out of Joint metaphor, 1959 is Ragle Gumm's idios kosmos-- the reality he has created to shield himself from the brutal reality of 1996, the koinos kosmos.

It is an early Dick novel, probably his first important one and was written in 1958 during the period in which he attempted to break into the mainstream market.
Basically, Time Out Of Joint is one long reveal, teasingly stretching the truth out for the reader.

She released a letter, which quickly found its way to the front page of the New York Times, that she had written on Oct. 11, 2001, to then National Security Agency director General Michael V. Hayden.
In fact, a 2002 investigation by the Joint Intelligence Committees concluded that the NSA was not doing as much as it could have been doing under the law—and that the entire U.S. intelligence community operated in a hypercautious defensive crouch.
There is also evidence, according to U.S. intelligence officials, that since the New York Times broke the story, the terrorists have modified their behavior, hampering our efforts to keep track of them—but also, on the plus side, hampering their ability to communicate with one another.

TIME OUT OF JOINT is one of Dick's earlier novels that treats the theme of "The World Is Not What We Think It Is" explicitly.
Time Out of Joint takes place in a 1959 small town world where nothing is as it seems, and it should appeal to both the non-science fiction fan who wants a good suspenseful read, and to dedicated sci-fi readers.
TIME OUT OF JOINT is one of the last novels before Dick's narratives became more complex and polished in the sixties.

Time Out of Joint is an early work, and tells the story of Rangle Gumm, a 40-something layabout who starts to suspect that his small-town suburban reality is not what it all seems.
The publication date was 1959, and not only is Dick presaging all sorts of recent alt.reality movies like the Matrix and Truman Show, but part of what I liked about this novel is his depictions of life in late-50's America.
He understands the phony veneer of post-war suburbia around the same time Twilight Zone was doing the same.
