Signal timing is the process of optimizing the operations of signalized intersections.
The objective of signal timing is to respond to the demands of all types of motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians in an optimal manner.
Signal timing is only effective as long as the traffic patterns that were used to generate the signal timing remain reasonably similar.

HVCEO Transportation Planning - Traffic Signal Coordination Handbook
A signal phase is a group of three intervals (the right-of-way (green), change (yellow), and clearance (red)) that are assigned to an independent traffic movement or combination of movements.
In an actuated signal control, the signal is designed to adjust its timing within specified limits to respond to traffic conditions at the moment, as registered with the controller via traffic detectors located in the street.
Signal coordination is perceived by many agencies as an advantageous improvement to the community or corridor in consideration.

The accuracy of the GPS signal itself is about 5 meters (16 ft) as of 2005 and has steadily improved over the last 15 years.
Many synchronization systems use GPS as a source of accurate time, hence one of the most common applications of this use is that of GPS as a reference clock for time code generators or NTP clocks.
The outdoor positioning system is based on signals and satellites which give the longitude and latitude to within a metre; the computer converts this data to a position on an electronic map of locality.

The expression "Timing is everything" is commonly associated with new business ventures, movie releases, advertising campaigns and marriage proposals, but nowhere is this statement more passionately embraced than in the world of traffic signal operation.
Signal timing patterns were evaluated to determine the most efficient intersection groupings and respective cycle lengths.
Time savings during PM drive times were not as dramatic due to more intersections operating at maximum capacity throughout the PM peak period.

Basic Signal Timing Elements   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Signalized intersections permit conflicting traffic movements to proceed efficiently and safely through space that is common to those movements.
The basic timing elements within each phase include the green interval, the effective green time, the yellow or amber interval, the all-red interval, the intergreen interval, the pedestrian WALK interval, and the pedestrian crossing interval.
Finally, the pedestrian crossing time is the time required for a pedestrian to cross the intersection.

Further, since the timings of the strobe signals vary depending on the timing data from the memory 31, phases of the strobe signals STBH and STBL are usually different from those of the system clock.
The output signal SL from the level comparator 6 is latched by a buffer 46 at the timing of the strobe signal STBL and stored in a flip-flop 47 at the timing of the strobe signal through a delay element 49.
In such a situation, the selector is switched from the strobe open signals from the decoder 301 provided at a terminal 1 to the strobe open signals from the memory 302 provided at a terminal 2 by a mode signal 305 given at a terminal S of the selector 303.

The central approach of TSTOP was to provide an optimized level of traffic signal operation on the city's most heavily traveled corridors and throughout some of its most heavily populated employment areas.
Of this number, 99 traffic signals on 5 critical corridors connecting the Downtown/Midtown/TMC gateway to the Uptown area were optimized in conjunction with the Department's plan to mitigate the effects of the Spur 527 closure.
Through TSTOP 2005, timing on 444 traffic signals on 52 corridors part of the Southwest, West Central, North Central, North West, North East, South East, Clear Lake, Kingwood and South Houston Zones were optimized, integrating adjacent intersections in order to establish a network operation model.

Jan/Feb 2002 Public Roads - Managing Traffic Flow Through Signal Timing
A new signal system and improved signal timing in Abilene, Texas, produced a 13-percent reduction in travel time, a 37-percent reduction in delay, and a 6-percent savings in fuel use.
For example, the pretimed controller for the signal at one intersection might be set to give the primary street 40 seconds of green time, and the secondary street might be assigned 15 seconds of green.
We've gone as far as adaptive signal control, where the traffic volume is read on a second-by-second basis and the signal timing is automatically adjusted.

Signal coordination is typically the most beneficial component of an ATMS because the coordination provides benefits for the entire day, every day of the year.
With the signal system providing 87% of the benefits to the Salt Lake Valley ATMS, it’s clear that this aspect of ATMS provides the biggest return on investment and in one year justifies the installation costs for the communication system.

The cycle length is the time that elapses for the signal to service all the signal phases between the beginning of green for the main street to the return of the beginning of green for the main street; that is, a complete sequence of signal indications.
This time, expressed in seconds, is dependent upon the traffic volume to be serviced at any given intersection (main street and side streets) and therefore varies by the time of day.

Adjusting Signal Timing (Part 2) - Crosstalk effects in serpentine traces
When a signal passes through a serpentine trace with coupling between the legs, there is an apparent speed-up of the signal.
The amount of apparent speed-up is directly related to the coupling strength between the legs and inversely related to the rise time of the signal passing through the section.
For long coupled lengths (those longer than the critical length) signals may become distorted as they pass through the serpentine section, but the degree of distortion is a complex function of the frequency of the signal.

PEDSAFE : countermeasures   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
In addition to concurrent pedestrian signal timing (where motorists may turn left or right across pedestrians’; paths after yielding to pedestrians), exclusive pedestrian intervals (see Traffic Signal Enhancements) stop traffic in all directions.
This is not very pedestrian-friendly, and many pedestrians will simply choose to ignore the signal and cross if and when there is a gap in traffic, negating the potential safety benefits of the exclusive signal.
Adjusting signal timing is very low cost and requires a few hours of staff time to accomplish.

The timing for each signal is determined based on traffic volume and traffic patterns in each particular area.

This project focused on the traffic flowing modeling, simulation, and signal timing plans evaluation of the Miller Hill corridor on Highway 194 (Central Entrance - Miller Trunk Highway) between Arlington Avenue and Haines Road (Duluth-Hermantown city limit).
The main goal of this research is to study the traffic flow on the corridor and develop a better signal timing plan to improve the efficiency of the traffic movement in that area.
For instance, from this study it is possible to develop an areawide adaptive traffic signal control system to continuously monitor current traffic flow conditions and provide optimal allocation of green-yellow-red signal duration time to different traffic streams in order to minimize the queues at the intersections along the roadway considered.

Vertical interval time code (abbreviated VITC and sometimes pronounced VIHT-see) is a timing signal that is part of a video recording.
VITC is one of two timing schemes adopted by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) in the 1960s.
The time code can be used to start a recording at a certain chronological time (such as 5:00:00 p.m.), or it can be used to keep a playback machine synchronized with a master time source.
