  Time - Time Travel
Time travel is the concept of traveling forward and backward to different points in time, much as we do through space.
The assumption that time travel or superluminal communications is impossible allows one to derive interesting results such as the no cloning theorem, and how the rules of quantum mechanics work to preserve causality is an active area of research.
Time, and the apparent movement of time, is connected to the number 12 - which is 1+2 =3 - or third dimension.

 Time Travel
Time travel is the concept of moving backward or forward to different points in time, in a manner analogous to moving through space.
Time travel themes in science fiction and the media can generally be grouped into two main types and a third, less common type (based on effect—methods are extremely varied and numerous), each of which is further subdivided.
A possible solution to this is to have the mechanics of time travel require that mass-energy be exchanged in precise balance between past and future at the moment of travel, or to simply expand the scope of the conservation law to encompass all timelines.

Although the possibility of traveling to the future by moving at relativistic velocities is taken for granted by physicists, many in the scientific community believe that backwards time travel is highly unlikely.

Time Travel - Fact or Fiction?
We define time travel to mean departure from a certain place and time followed (from the traveller's point of view) by arrival at the same place at an earlier (from the sedentary observer's point of view) time.
Time travel paradoxes arise from the fact that departure occurs after arrival according to one observer and before arrival according to another.
Is time travel really impossible, or is it merely another phenomenon where "impossible" means "nature is weirder than we think?" The answer is more interesting than you might think.

Modelling time travel in fiction @ Things Of Interest
Time travel is a subject of great interest to me - not the actual, you know, nuts and bolts physics of it, but the various possible models that can be imagined.
Adding in the condition that every time traveller remains "tied" to their "original era", this would enable the scenario seen in the DC crossover "Zero Hour", in which people born thousands of years ago disappear in increasing order of birthdate, and people from the future also disappearing, as history is "eaten up" from both ends.
Time travel is possible, but you can only jump backwards or forwards by precisely a hundred years - every other era is inaccessible to you.

On Time Travel, Science Fiction and the Many Worlds Theory of Quantum Mechanics
You move in a straight line in a fourth, which you call time, and stay rooted to one place in a fifth, which is the first fundamental of probability.
After a short time, there are countless other “parallel” branches that occupy the same point in time and space, but at a different point in probability, many of which will be nearly identical to the one which is being observed.
Traveling through time in the manner set out by many science fiction writers becomes therefore no simple matter; not only must the time traveler find the desired co-ordinates in space and time, but must also specify the location in probability, lest the traveler find himself in a drastically different world from the one he left.

Time travel in fiction can get a little more far out than time travel in television.
Many time travel stories simply use time travel as a method of getting from one scene to the next, but some of them play with the paradoxes possible with time travel.

Time Travel in Einstein's Universe by J. Richard Gott
Although I didn't do any research into time travel per se, a lot of the ideas that Gott discusses are very familiar to me and therefore it is impossible for me to judge how this book would appear to the non-technical reader who has no knowledge of the concepts and theories being discussed.
Once he has established the principles of time travel, Gott then moves on to explain why brilliant scientists like himself expend all this effort researching time travel, because, although time travel is theoretically possible, it is not practical nor will be for many generations to come.
The real reason for researching time travel is not to build a time machine, but to better understand how the Universe works and, in Gott's case, to answer one of the greatest questions of all time, "where did the Universe come from?".

Time Travel and Modern Physics (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
It is ironic that time travel should lead generically not to contradictions or to constraints (in the normal region) but to underdetermination of what happens in the time travel region by what happens everywhere else (an underdetermination tied neither to a probabilistic dynamics or to a free edge to space-time).
In the time travel case there is no such causal story to be told: there simply has to be some pre-established harmony between the global space-time structure and the matter distribution on some space-like surfaces.
Thus the reason why the global time travel properties of the counterfactual space-time have to be significantly different from the actual space-time is not that there are problems with metric singularities or alterations in the metric that force significant global changes when we go to the counterfactual matter distribution.

Time Machines: Time Travel in Physics, Metaphysics, and Science Fiction takes the reader on an exhilarating journey through the intriguing theories of scientists and the far-flung imaginations of writers.
Sadly, Nahin completely ignores one aspect that features prominently in many modern time travel narratives: the idea of alternate universes / alternate realities and, tied to that, the narrative perspective of sequentiality, which follows the POV of the protagonist of a narrative and projects his continuity against the alterations his actions cause.
The idea of showing the effects of time travel thought on philosophy and literature (and vice versa) is good, but I felt that a clearer separation would have made the book much easier to read.
