Timecode - Review - Stumped? - Stumped At the Video Store is a Magazine About Movies, DVD releases, actors, filmakers, and more.
Timecode is a film student's orgiastic dream--marveling at how Figgis and his camera crew timed the material so well and moved so effectively is an enthralling way to spend two hours--but this facet should also be duly noted should you be out looking to find a romantic comedy or action film.
In Timecode, director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) tackles the idea of shooting one film in real-time with four digital video cameras shooting different characters who interact simultaneously.
However, watching the tepid plot of this film unfold is one of those experiences that most people, including myself, could easily do without.

 BEA Production Aesthetics & Criticism
Matching (jam sync'd) timecode may or may not be recorded on the film by means of in-the-camera keycode and an Aaton master clock module.
This now provides a timecode for the audio so that the audio can later be conformed or reconstituted in the event of a computer crash of the edited workprint (assuming that a back-up disk is kept of the edit decision list).
Using the timecode numbers as a "beginning of the scene" startmark or line-up reference, the editor performs a series of in-computer "audio insert edits" to sync up the dailies (matching up the picture and corresponding sync audio) for each take.

 Timecode
Mike Figgis' "Timecode" is without a doubt the most extravagant, revolutionary, and groundbreaking act of filmmakin g to come along since the invention of the film camera.
The focus of "Timecode" is on people in and around the film industry, and they're not necessarily people that you'd stand up and root for.
The only problem with "Timecode" is with the actual story.

Spek is also responsible for operating a “holdover” from the show's film days — slates, or “sticks.” She explains that because timecode and audio are recorded directly onto the HD tapes, the slate is no longer technically necessary, as it was when Titus was a film show and required post synching of picture and audio.
Film is too expensive, so you normally rehearse a bunch of times before rolling film.
Both have film backgrounds as well as video experience, though Titus represents the first time either has shot HD.

Linear timecode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The sound of linear timecode is a jarring and distinctive noise and has been used as a sound-effects shorthand to imply 'telemetry' or 'computers'.
A special bit in the linear timecode frame, the 'biphase mark correction' bit, ensures that there are an even number of AC transitions in each timecode frame.
Each frame is terminated by a 'sync word' which has a special predefined sync relationship with any video or film content.

 Space Junk Review: Timecode
Timecode, however, is truly an experimental film, not because it is artsy and strange, but rather, because it tries something with the medium that has never been done before.
Timecode is definitely a movie intended for the attention deficit disorder generation, was a really innovative idea and I think everyone should see it just because it is a unique viewing experience.
In Timecode, the movie screen is divided up into 4 frames, and each frame simultaneously displays different footage.

 Technical Introduction to Timecode
Timecode systems assign a number to each frame of video analogously to the way that film is manufactured with edge numbers to allow each frame to be uniquely identified.
Timecode is recorded on studio videotape and audiotape recorders as a longitudinal track with characteristics similar or identical to those of an audio track.
The color frame flag is asserted when the least significant bit of the timecode frame number is intentionally locked to the color frame sequence of the associated video, that is, locked to Frame A and Frame B of SMPTE 170M.

OFFOFFOFF film review TIMECODE movie by Mike Figgis with Salma Hayek, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Stellan Skarsgard, Holly Hunter, Saffron Burrows, Kyle MacLachlan, Julian Sands, Richard Edson, Glenne Headly, Leslie Mann, Steven Weber written by Mike Figgis
But "Timecode," easily his finest work to date, is so different, so creative a motion picture that even I could put away my anti-Figgis sentiments for an hour and a half and enjoy the film purely on its own considerable merits.
"Timecode" is a brilliantly conceived and executed piece of experimental filmmaking that questions the notions of traditional narrative cinema by challenging the very way in which we view movies.
Watching "Timecode" is like no other cinematic experience, and you'd be well advised to sit further back than usual, since your eyes will be wandering — sometimes racing — all over the screen.

Also, what is happening on other segments of the screen is sometimes more compelling than what is happening in the segment we?re supposed to be paying attention to (especially the whacked shenanigans of a drugged-out security guard, who scores powder and a hot blonde in the women?s bathroom while on duty at the production offices).

SMPTE time code - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SMPTE timecode is a set of cooperating standards to label individual frames of video or film with a timecode defined by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.
In general, SMPTE timecode frame rate information is implicit, known from the rate of arrival of the timecode from the medium, or other metadata encoded in the medium.
As timecodes in analog systems are prone to bit-errors and drop-outs, most timecode processing devices check for internal consistency in the sequence of timecode values, and use simple error correction schemes to correct for short error bursts.

 rec.arts.movies.tech FAQ
Film `dailies' (quickly made prints of camera negative) are often known as `work prints,' as, after they are viewed by directors and cinematographers, they are the actual prints with which film editors (assuming they actually are editing on film) `work' as they cut and splice the film together to appropriately reflect a film's story.
Films in 16mm and sometimes 35mm are cut into so-called `A and B rolls,' in a `checkerboard' fashion in order to ensure that splices will not appear on the screen when the prints are projected.
Films with magnetic sound also have a `balance stripe' on the perforated edge in order to keep the film thickness even, although sound is not normally recorded on it.

SMPTE, The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, are responsible for writing the standards for film and video recording systems used all over North America (Bobby Nathan). One of their biggest achievements happened in 1967, when they decided that there needed to be a standardized timecode within video and audio.
Well the timecode is a digital signal, and since that has to be read by computers it is a series of ones and zeros that specify the timestamp for each frame.
SMPTE timecode can be added during the shooting of production, or sometimes afterward during the editing process.

In the SMPTE timecode standard there are not only different frame counts to correspond with the different possible frame rates (NTSC=29.97fps, PAL=25fps, film=24fps, etc) but, because the NTSC frame rate is a non-integer rate, there are two standards known as Drop Frame and Non-Drop Frame.
The SMPTE timecode standard for NTSC represents frames between 0-29 (30 individual frames), but because there are not actually 30 frames in a second (rather 29.97), timecode that ran from 00:00:00:00 to 01:00:00:00 would actually be 3.6 seconds longer than a real hour (approximately).
In other words, in Drop Frame timecode, the timecode 00:04:59;29 is immediately followed by the timecode 00:05:00;02 (the 00:05:00;00 and 00:05:00;01 frame values are dropped).
