Unlike it's infamous big-brother in "The Simpsons," "Futurama" had it's feet firmly on the ground from the start; from the animation to the character development, it seems as though everything that occurs throughout the four-season course of the series was planned from the beginning (and as you'll find out, in some instances, it's the truth).
I personally think Futurama is funnier than the Simpsons or at least as funny as the Simpsons were in their prime.
The problem for Futurama is that many of its jokes are random and are infused with a basic layer of science/math humor, which is not altogether surprising given its science fiction setting.

Futurama - TvWiki, the free encyclopedia
Futurama is an animated American cartoon series created by Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons) and David X. Cohen (also a writer for The Simpsons).
Groening revealed in the DVD audio commentary for this episode that he intended "The Simpsons" to be a television show in the Futurama universe, and conversely "Futurama" was a television show in "The Simpsons" universe, which is somewhat confirmed in the Simpsons episode in which he guest stars.
In the USA (DVD Region 1), the first season of Futurama was released on DVD on March 25, 2003; the second season on August 12, 2003; the third season on March 9, 2004; and the fourth (and final) on August 24, 2004.

 Futurama Cartoon
Futurama is an American animated television series created by Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons) and David X. Cohen (also a writer for The Simpsons).
The futuristic time frame allowed the show's writers to be creative with their humor by introducing ideas and events from pulp science fiction of the mid 20th century into the series.
On March 18, 2006, Billy West wrote on his message board that Futurama would return in 26 episodes for television and that the plan for four Futurama DVD movies, which he previously wrote about, is either delayed or dropped.

DVD Verdict Review - Futurama: Volume Three
As Futurama fans know, thanks to various scheduling issues with Fox, these episodes were aired during the third (2000-01), fourth (2001-02), and fifth (2002-03) broadcast seasons of the show, despite their comprising the third full "season" of episodes.
Futurama concerns the trials, tribulations, and outright catastrophes that befall Philip J. Fry (voiced by Billy West, Ren and Stimpy), an earnestly dim pizza delivery boy who is catapulted into the world of the Year 3000 due to an unfortunate accident involving a cryogenic tube.
The machine shows him an alternative timeline where he, Fry, is called upon by Colonel Colin Pacman (wacka wacka) to fight—you guessed it—Space Invaders from the planet Nintendu 64 ("Tremble in fear at our three different kinds of ships!!!").

The Timeline of the Highlander Universe compiled by I. The Captain Power Timeline, by Rebecca Lovett, is a good guide to events in the series itself, and it has an explanation for the uninitiated of the dating system, but it seems a little bare in general.
The Timeline of the Vampire Chronicles is actually taken from The Vampire Companion by Katherine Ramsland, with the cooperation of Anne Rice.

With its abstracted, teardrop-shaped vehicle form depicted in motion, with the tall winglike element rising from its center, the overall effect is one of speed and movement—characteristic of the Streamlined style and appropriate to the automobile and airplane age.
Norman Bel Geddes was trained as a theatrical set designer but best known for another project for General Motors, the Futurama exhibition at the 1939 New York World's Fair.
This exhibit, through which visitors were propelled on a giant conveyor belt, depicted a utopian vision of America in the near future, a world dependent on the speed and efficiency of the automobile for work and recreation.
