As you read this, there is an orbiter working at Mars, three spacecraft are on their way, four are in development for missions in 2001 and 2003, and there is an international commitment for the next decade or more to collect samples of Martian rocks and soil and return them to Earth for study.
Human exploration of Mars undoubtedly will happen in the next century - whether it begins in the first 15 years or the second remains to be seen.
Exploration is the raison d'ĂȘtre for space programs, and Mars is the destination where we look for ourselves.

 Space exploration information - Search.com
Space exploration is the physical exploration of outer space: the technologies, science, and politics regarding space endeavors.
Two other famous achievements in the first decade of space exploration were putting the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin aboard Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961 (again by the USSR), and first spacewalk (by Alexei Leonov, also USSR cosmonaut) in 1965.
Per the Vision for Space Exploration, the Space Shuttle is due to be retired in 2010 due mainly to its low reliability (it killed 14 astronauts) and high cost of program reaching over a billion dollars per flight.

 Mars Exploration Strategies
The human exploration of Mars has been historically placed as an objective to be considered only by the grandchildren of today's generation of planetary exploration enthusiasts.
The Mars Exploration Study Project was undertaken by the Exploration Programs Office (now, Planetary Projects Office) in response to the strategic planning initiatives of the Associate Administrator for Exploration at NASA Headquarters, in the summer of 1992.
Mars exploration will not be without risks; however, the risk-mitigation philosophy will be a critically important element in technical and fiscal feasibility of these missions, as well as the acceptability of the mission concept to the public and its elected leaders.

Timeline of solar system exploration Summary
Sources of revenue include planetary science data, returned samples, delivery of science instruments to planetary destinations, use of the abundant natural resources in space, delivery of television and Internet content in the form of photos and videos, manufacture of materials in space, and space tourism.
The exploration of a planet by spacecraft can be characterized in terms of several stages or levels of completeness: reconnaissance, orbital survey, surface investigation, sample return, and human exploration.
Depending on the sensors aboard the spacecraft, data may be collected on planetary surface composition; atmospheric composition, structure, and dynamics; the nature of the gravity field, which can yield information about the internal structure of the planet; and the nature of the magnetic field.

It is also the first planetary probe to include a separate roving robot probe (Sojourner) since the Soviet Union's Luna 21 in 1973.
This is probably the most ambitious and complex unmanned planetary project ever attempted, costing more than $2.5 billion and involving 17 nations and hundreds of scientists from the U.S. and Europe.
Contact with the probe is lost on December 3, 1999 as it is descending through the Martian atmosphere and it is never heard from again, the first failure of a U.S. planetary soft landing in 30 years.
