  MAXIMUM METAL
I wanted was a nice visual representation of the history of heavy metal/hard rock because I was tired of straining my eyes reading long documents with tiny fonts and since I couldn't find one, I came up with this tree-style diagram representing 30+ years of hard rock and metal with some of its outside influences.
There's no way in hell I was going to try and make this all-inclusive with the thousands of bands that have been around, so I chose the bigger names, some influential bands and even threw in some of my favorites; indulgence is acceptable when you create.
Also, special thanks has to go to metal writer Martin Popoff for some editing changes when this was in its early stage.

Heavy metal music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that emerged as a defined musical style in the 1970s, having its roots in hard rock bands which, between 1967 and 1974, took blues and rock to create a hybrid with a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterised by the use of highly amplified distortion.
Whereas a painting is experienced visually, a symphony experienced audibly, a heavy metal band's "image" and the common theme that binds all their music is expressed in the artwork on the album, the set of the stage, the tone of the lyrics, the clothes of the band, in addition to the sound of the music.
Heavy metal has a relationship with spiritual issues in both symbol and music theory, as heavy metal chords and harmonies emphasize the use of open fifths—drawing ironic parallels to harmony changes in Christian Sacred Harp singing.

Heavy metal themes are typically more grave than the generally airy pop from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, focusing on war, nuclear annihilation, environmental issues, political and religious propaganda.
Ultimately, "pure" heavy metal would position itself at the periphery of pop culture, never quite at centre, and metal denizens contend that the move towards the centre was a commercialism that compromised both the artistic integrity of the form and the opportunity for messages to be taken seriously.

 Glam metal -
Glam metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal music, that arose in the late 1970s in the United States.
The genre is referred to by detractors as hair metal (a term popularized by MTV in the 1990s), due to the bands styling their long hair in a teased fashion.
Another factor the contributed to the decline of glam metal was the general "out with the old" attitude often held by the status quo whenever a new decade comes around (not unlike the popular hatred of disco in the early 1980s).

 Progressive metal -
Progressive metal (often shortened to prog, or prog metal when differentiating from progressive rock) is a genre of heavy metal music which shares traits with progressive rock including use of complex compositional structures, odd time signatures, and intricate instrumental playing.
It was not a typical progressive metal song, but nonetheless it opened Queensrÿche's music to a whole new legion of fans, which in turn had an effect on the popularity of other progressive metal bands of the time.
For example, two bands that are commonly identified as progressive metal, King's X and Opeth, are at opposite ends of the sonic spectrum to one another.

There is little argument that heavy metal began in earnest with Black Sabbath (though the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" is considered by some to be the first heavy metal song), and Christe holds to convention and begins his metal timeline in early 1970.
If Christe is to be faulted, it is on the grounds of hero worship: he's a metal fan, scribe (a music writer living in Brooklyn) and practitioner (in a digital metal band called Black Noerd), and readers might wish for more critical analysis about the culture of fans.
First of all, the section on the 1970's is only like 20 pages long, he does only one short chapter on hair metal, which isn't my favorite, but helped put metal in the mainstream in the '80's.
